(January 24, 2008)--A Mexican police commander shot several times in an ambush is under heavy police protection in an El Paso hospital.

The security surrounding Commander Fernando Lozano Sandoval is a precaution El Paso officials are taking because of the recent wave of violence in neighboring Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

The Chihuahua State Investigations Agency commander was shot Monday night in Juarez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso.

He was one of three police officials shot in Juarez over two days, and the only one to survive.

Lozano was transferred Tuesday to El Paso County's Thomason Hospital, which is the only Level 1 trauma center within 280 miles.

Details of his condition aren't available, but El Paso police Officer Chris Mears says his department is working with El Paso County sheriff's deputies and federal agents to protect Lozano.
