State Rep. Jim Dunnam, D-Waco, and three Democratic colleagues Wednesday accused the Republican leadership of the Texas House of advocating an expansion of gambling behind closed doors and vowed to oppose the gambling proposal if it comes up for a vote this session.

The Democrats also appealed to the state's leadership to eliminate slot machines as a revenue-generating option.

Limited legalization of video slot machines has become one of the most contentious issues before the state Legislature this session, as lawmakers look for ways to generate enough money to slash property taxes and give public schools more money.

A handful of proposals have been made that would legalize state-taxed video gambling at horse and dog racing tracks and Indian reservations.

One proposal would allow Las Vegas-style casinos in any county that voted to approve the measure.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Rick Perry said he opposes expanding gambling in Texas.

Perry previously proposed video gambling as a way to help fund public school education.
