Insurgents detonated two car bombs and fired rocket-propelled grenades at U.S. forces Saturday during an attack on Baghdad’s notorious Abu Ghraib prison, Reuters reported.
As man as 20 U.S. soldiers were wounded during the fight, The Associated Press reported.
Mliitary officials in Baghdad later reported that 18 U.S. troops and 12 detainees were wounded.
Lt. Col. Guy Rudisill, spokesman for detainee affairs, told Reuters that a group of 40 to 60 insurgents attacked around 9 a.m. CST Saturday.
The area was secured about four hours later.
“The assault by the anti-Iraqi forces failed, and the FOB is secured and locked down,” officials said in a statement released Saturday afternoon.
The prison is infamous for torture during the reign of Saddam Hussein and later for alleged abuse of detainees at the hands of U.S. military personnel.
The attack comes on the same day that five people were killed in a car bombing near Baqubah and an education minister was shot and killed in Baghdad.
