Sixteen people died in the crash of a coalition CH-47 Chinook Helicopter in Afghanistan, military officials said Wednesday.

All of the dead were believed to be Americans.

At least four crewmembers were among the dead according to news reports.

The crash occurred in severe weather near Ghazni, about 100 miles southwest of Kabul.

The helicopter was one of two returning to Bagram Airfield after a routine mission in the southern part of the country.

A recovery operation is underway at the site of the crash, military officials said.
