(January 25, 2008)--A 40-year-old elephant has died while trying to give birth at the Fort Worth Zoo.

Officials say the calf also died.

"Babe" the Asian elephant arrived at the Fort Worth Zoo in 1991 for its breeding program.

She was the zoo's oldest female elephant.

Zoo officials say Babe went into labor Sunday afternoon and her contractions continued for two days, but the calf never moved into the birth canal.

Although Babe rested and did normal physical activity, her health unexpectedly declined and she died Thursday in her sleep.

A necropsy showed Babe had a torn uterus.

The Fort Worth Zoo has six other elephants.
