The Texas House, the Texas Senate and Gov. Rick Perry took time Thursday to honor the national championship Lady Bears basketball team.
The Lady Bears defeated the Michigan State Lady Spartans 84-62 in the championship game of the NCAA Women’s Final Four tournament in Indianapolis to bring home the program’s first national title.
On Thursday coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson and her team were honored on the floor of the House and the floor of the Senate, where Sen. Kip Averitt, R-McGregor, introduced a resolution recognizing the Lady Bears for their accomplishment.
The House voted to approve a similar resolution last Thursday on a motion by Rep. Jim Dunnam, D-Waco.
Later Gov. Rick Perry presented the team with a picture of Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm clad in a Baylor jersey, drinking a Dr Pepper and eating Bluebell Ice Cream at her desk.
Under the terms of a wager between the two governors, Granholm agreed to enjoy the ice cream and soda at her desk while wearing the jersey.
The picture is posted on Granholm’s official web site

Mulkey-Robertson presented Perry with a game ball signed by the members of the team, then the governor, a Texas A&M graduate, joined the Lady Bears in raising a bear claw for a rousing, “Sic ‘em Bears.”
Perry accidentally knocked over the team’s championship trophy moments later, but no damage was done.
One player told him not to worry because “we can get another one.”
