Tens of thousands of people streamed into St. Peter’s Square after the bells began to ring, to await the formal announcement of the new pontiff by Cardinal Medina Estevez.

Moments later, Ratzinger stepped out on the central balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square to deliver a traditional blessing.

"I entrust myself to your prayers," he told the cheeering crowd.

At the seminary where Ratzinger studied for the priesthood, the school director wept with joy at the announcement.

Students at St. Michael's seminary in Traunstein, Germany, pumped
their arms and cheered.

As a cardinal, Ratzinger was one of the Catholic Church's leading enforcers of orthodoxy.

He is also known as a man of deep personal faith.

He choked up as he delivered the homily at Pope John Paul's funeral.

The new Pope dined Tuesday evening with the cardinals who elected him, and will spend the night at the Vatican hotel.

He'll preside over a Mass Wednesday morning in the Sistine Chapel and he will be formally installed as Pope on Sunday.

The election came just a day after the 115 voting cardinals began their conclave in the Sistine Chapel.

The cardinals voted once yesterday and twice earlier Tuesday without success.

But on the fourth ballot Tuesday, Ratzinger got the required two-thirds majority for election.

Some analysts expressed surprise at the quickness of the decision, but said election early in the process was not unprecedented. Pope Pius XII was elected on the third ballot in the 1930s.

This is the first time since 1978 that the cardinals have met to elect a pope.
