(January 30, 2008)--Some Methodist ministers are making a final attempt to stop George W. Bush's presidential library, museum and institute from being built at SMU.

The pastors say United Methodist law requires approval from the church's South Central Jurisdiction, whose 290 delegates meet in July.

The opponents say at least one-third of the delegates are against the Bush institute because it will promote his administration's policies, which they feel conflict with church teachings.

But Southern Methodist officials say the church already gave its blessing when the Methodist mission council in March authorized the school to lease land to the Bush Foundation.

An official announcement on the library's location is pending, although SMU, which is First Lady Laura Bush's alma mater, is the lone finalist.

Baylor University is the only institution technically still in the running for the facility.

The other finalist, the University of Dallas, has withdrawn its bid.
