HEWITT (May 16, 2012)—A middle school boy was taken by ambulance Wednesday morning to a Waco hospital after a vehicle struck him while he rode his bicycle across a street, escorted by a crossing guard.
School Zone crossing guards at Hewitt Drive and Panther Way said the boy was crossing the street when he was struck.
Midway ISD spokeswoman Traci Marlin said the seventh grade student was in a crosswalk, accompanied by a crossing guard, when he was struck.
The boy, whose name and exact age were not released, was taken by East Texas EMS to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center as a precaution, Marlin said.
He was later released and has since returned to class, the district said.
The driver of the pickup was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended operator’s license and was cited for disregarding a school crossing guard.
He told police he didn’t see the child or the crossing guards in the intersection.
