(February 14, 2008)—The Reverend Billy Graham is in fair condition at a North Carolina hospital after successful surgery.
Mission Health and Hospitals spokeswoman Merrill Gregory says the 89-year-old evangelist had a valve replaced in a shunt that drains excess fluid from his brain through a tube into his abdominal cavity.
Graham's spokesman, Larry Ross, says the surgery was elective, but was needed because a valve that was installed in 2000 had worn out, allowing symptoms of Parkinson's disease to return.
Gregory says Graham was conscious after the 28-minute operation and visiting with family members. But she says he will likely remain in the Asheville hospital for several days while the new computerized valve is programmed to maintain desired fluid levels and pressure in his brain.
