Edwards Endorses Obama Save Email Print

A | A | A

(February 18, 2008)—Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, announced his endorsement Monday for Barack Obama in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“By voting for Senator Obama, we can say it is time to turn away from the divisive partisan politics of the past and work together for a brighter future for our children and our grandchildren,” Edwards said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

“Now more than ever, we need a leader who can inspire us to do better, to be better. Barack Obama is that leader,” Edwards said.

Edwards is a nine-term member of Congress whose district includes the president’s Crawford-area ranch, whose efforts behalf of both active duty troops and military veterans has earned him respect from both sides of the aisle.

“Representative Edwards is a strong advocate for our men and women in uniform and I'm honored to have his support,” Obama said.

“Keeping faith with those who serve must always be a core American value and a cornerstone of American patriotism. Whether Democrat, Republican, or independent, we can unite with common purpose around the commitment to our servicemen and women that begins at enlistment and must never end.”

As a former Republican and retired teacher, single white mom, I am concerned about the power of the press in this country. Upon careful research I have come to believe in the hope for change that Sen. Obama represents. Of concern is the comparison between Hillary's experience vs. Obama's wisdom. Before you consider Hillary as worthy of our trust and vote, please rent the DVD, "The Clinton Chronicles" that show their long term involvement in political corruption going all the way back to Arkansas. That's experience I do not want to support. Sen. Obama clearly is the LEAST elite and closer to what I believe is the average American in past experiences and financial status. Comparing (Obama,McCain, Clinton)net worth alone...4M to 100M...would be like earning 1,000k a month to 100,000k a month...how out of touch does that make McCain/Clinton to most Americans? Lastly, Obama is the ONLY one who had the foresight and courage to vote against the war.Clinton would escalate us into another.

It's no wonder the rest of the country thinks we are backwards. They only have to look at these comments to confirm it.

It is not hatred. It is fear. It is scary to think that someone that America does not know as a person can ride the wave of instant popularity. I feel like America is voting for their soap opera vision of a president. All I see is a smooth talker. Read his portions of his own book on his own website. Yes, CNN debunked a lot of misinformation about him, but it is a fact that he was reared by a mother who was non-religious. His early education was in private mixed religious schools in another country and they weren't a base. He writes about his own cocaine and alcohol use. His father and stepfather were not Christians. Who knows what he really believes? He hasn't been tested. No politician has been able to touch him because when they do, we start voting for him. Go figure. America will regret this. I have never voted Republican before but I may in November.

the bigotry on this section is saddening...i don't support obama but i think that people are trying to use his ethnic pride and his middle name against him...it's just sad to see so much hatred

I do not care what gender or color a person is, I do care about their core beliefs. Chet has the right to endorse his choice, HOWEVER, his choice has made me decide I can no longer be in Chet's camp as I have always been. Sorry but my beliefs are mine the same as his are his. I believe in GOD and COUNTRY.

This is unbelievable. I went to the website for Obama's church. The church magazine includes an article with Louis Farakkan and his vision of the future of Islam. Is this really who the American people want to lead us?

Posted by: Susie Location: Central Texas on Feb 20, 2008 at 08:19 AM
Alisha - SHALLOW...I am not shallow...I am only stating the facts. "TRUE TO OUR NATIVE LAND" ...FYI...that is NOT America..that is Africa!!!!! Obama is a MUSLIM! I have nothing against the color of someone's skin! But I have a LOT against someone pretending to be an AMERICAN!!!!

Posted by: Cindy Location: Belton on Feb 20, 2008 at 08:11 AM
WHERE EXACTLY IS OBAMA'S LOYALTY WITH, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (OR) AFRICA? Take a good look at all the videos on his church's website. They are SCARY! http://www.tucc.org/about.htm 1 posted on their website ....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZXeNk7H3u4 2 more very disturbing ..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8QCkgg5Kjo&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccbPVMBKQpA&feature=related Way to go Chet! You just endorsed a man that won't even acknowledge the US Pledge of Allegiance or our Flag.

Posted by: bob Location: waco on Feb 20, 2008 at 07:40 AM
anyone who votes for obama hates america. How can you support a terrorist loving muslim like him. shame on you chet. too bad bush cant stay in for 4 more years. he is doing just fine. maybe huckabee will win, id like to see a real god fearing man put in office, not some uppity muslim.

Posted by: joe on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:37 PM
chet must not want to run for re-election because he just put the final nails in his political coffin

Posted by: Voter Location: Austin on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Just checked out the website for what you said was Obama's church. The magazine is showing Farrakan as a friend. Are you sure that is the correct church? Isn't Farrakan the leader of the nation of Islam?

Posted by: Alisha Location: Waco on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:15 PM
Susie- I see a Christian church that is proud of its ethnic roots. There is nothing scary about that. How can you be so shallow?

Posted by: Alisha Location: waco on Feb 19, 2008 at 07:08 PM
The ignorance and prejudice evident in these comments is shameful. Educate yourselves before you give in to rumor! I've never been so embarassed of my fellow Texans.

I bet everyone who has posted a comment and is against obama is for bush and look at what a good job he is doing for the country. I really think u guys are not ready 4 change and the only reason u are not for obama is bc of the color of his skin, its 2008 how sad!

Posted by: Susie Location: Central Texas on Feb 19, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Wanna see something scary....this is the church that Obama belongs to! http://www.tucc.org/home.htm http://www.tucc.org/about.htm Now that is some scary stuff!!!!!! Still want to vote for OBAMA?? I say NOT!

Posted by: Maria Location: Waco on Feb 19, 2008 at 01:16 PM
chet edwards i and my family of three generations have supported you loyally. i would think, that would have counted for something. to have at least waited to hear from the people in texas, instead you threw us to the lions. i want solutions not insperation. maybe next time we should just nominate Joel Osteen. you sir have lost our support.

Posted by: christi Location: lampasas on Feb 19, 2008 at 12:33 PM
we may not be ready for a female but i am more ready for hillary that i ever will be for obama... lord help us.. at least hillary has more insite of what the presidence is like and she maye be pretty good since bill is there helping. but did you see that Michelle Barrack said today for the first time that she is proud of our country.. but did she say the united states or her muslin country? should question this..... vote anyone but obama

Posted by: Taylor Location: Waco on Feb 19, 2008 at 02:53 AM
Way to go Chet! It's risky for a Congressman to come out publicly for a candidate before the primary, but Edwards has the courage to put the nation's interests above his own. America needs change, and Chet's sons deserve better than the status quo.

Posted by: Mclennan County Resident Location: Waco on Feb 18, 2008 at 11:08 PM
Who says Mclennan County will go for Obama? We haven't voted!

Posted by: Ryan Location: Waco, TX on Feb 18, 2008 at 10:44 PM
The Pledge of Allegiance and muslim allegations have been absolutely proven false. Those who continue the rumors are simply hateful. Tom, with all due respect, Chet’s endorsement does not diminish his appreciation of your support or any other supporter who may have a different opinion on the current nomination process. While Chet represents the entire area, he should be free to express his opinion and make a well-informed decision about who he feels is best to lead the country. Not only that but who he feels would be the best name at the top of the ticket to help local representatives get elected, like himself. Please respect his decision, though you may disagree with it, and don't take it personally. You'll also see that McLennan County will go for Obama so the argument could be made that he is simply representing his constituency.

I cannot believe that anyone could be supported for President that will not say the Pledge of Allegiance. If this is who Chet endorses, then I know who I won't vote for.

Posted by: jack Location: hewitt on Feb 18, 2008 at 03:26 PM
that was not his campaign office...it was reported wrong by a station in houston and then every conservative talk show took it as the gospel and spread the virus...and it you think that saying he won't say the pledge of ALLEGIANCE is going to make people not vote for him, then keep drinking the limbaugh hannity reagan kool-aid and watch democrats take the white house and congress

Posted by: susie Location: kempner on Feb 18, 2008 at 02:56 PM
That does not surprise me! I heard on KBED Waco this morning that the people running Obamas campaign headquarters in Houston have a big picture of Che Guervera on the wall. That's the dude that wanted to nuke the US back in the 60s. He was a murderer and close pal of Fidel Castro. Obama won't wear an American flag on his lapel, he was schooled as a Muslim, his people are devotees of a communist anti-American anarchist, and now Chet Edwards is endorsing him, that sounds about right. Did anyone happen to catch Chet Edwards on the interview on FSTV? He is scary, kind of a Jekyll/Hyde sort of guy. Who he is in Central Texas is totally different from who he is when he is in Washington

Posted by: Carolyn Location: Bremond on Feb 18, 2008 at 02:39 PM
How can anyone support someone who will not say the Pledge of Alligiance. If elected, will he do away with that like they did away with prayer.
