(February 19, 2008)—The Reverend Billy Graham continues to recover in a North Carolina hospital.
The 89-year-old evangelist underwent a 28-minute medical procedure last Wednesday to replace a valve in a shunt that drains excess fluid from his brain into his abdominal cavity.
Officials say Graham could be released from the hospital within a few days.
Graham's spokesman, Larry Ross, said the surgery was elective, but was needed because the valve that was installed in 2000 had worn out, allowing symptoms of Parkinson's disease to return.
Mission Health and Hospitals spokeswoman Merrill Gregory said Graham was conscious and visiting with family members following the operation.
Gregory said Graham would likely remain in the Asheville hospital for several days while technicians programmed the new computerized valve to maintain the desired fluid levels and pressure in his brain.
