(February 21, 2008)—Waco police have a mystery on their hands after officers discovered the bodies of a 42-year-old man and his cat in a residence at 1119 Monte Vista Thursday afternoon.

Police identified the dead man Thursday evening as Richard Matthew Turner of Waco.

Relatives called police around 3 p.m. Thursday to report they were unable to get in touch with Turner.

Justice of the Peace Fernando Villarreal pronounced Turner dead and ordered an autopsy.

Turner showed no signs of obvious trauma or foul play.

Initially authorities suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Villarreal said the house had neither running water nor electricity, but said it did have a space heater.

Family members said Turner was running a generator in the garage of the home, as well.

But Waco firefighters tested the house for concentrations of carbon monoxide and ruled out the deadly odorless gas as a likely cause of the deaths of Turner and the cat.
