A proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages hit a stumbling block Monday in the Texas Senate when Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston, “tagged” the bill—a parliamentary move that delayed Monday’s scheduled committee hearing on the bill until Wednesday at the earliest.

The public hearing was reset for Thursday, so the soonest the bill could get to the Senate floor would be Saturday.
With only two weeks left in the legislative session, and multiple deadlines looming, any delay now decreases a bill's chance for passage.
Texas law already prohibits same-sex marriages.
The bill aims to safeguard that law from judicial challenges by amending the state constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman.
