(February 21, 2008)--The U.S. Embassy in Belgrade says a charred body was found in the Embassy after a fire was put out Thursday.

Serbs broke into the U.S. Embassy and set fire to an office earlier in the day, while rioters rampaged through Belgrade's streets in protest of Western support for Kosovo's independence.

The White House has strongly criticized the Serbian government, saying the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade "was attacked by thugs" and Serb police didn't do enough to stop it.

In a conference call with reporters from Air Force One, presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino said the U.S. has expressed its "concern and displeasure" to the Serbian government because its police did not prevent the violence at the embassy.

It took police about 45 minutes to arrive at the scene.
