(February 25, 2008)—Vice President Dick Cheney visits Fort Hood Tuesday to deliver remarks at the III Corps Flag Uncasing Ceremony and then to speak to about 10,000 soldiers at a rally on Cooper Field.
The ceremony marks the official return of III Corps to post after a 15-month deployment to Iraq.
Because of the visit, Fort Hood’s Main and Santa Fe Gates will be closed from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.
Other entrances will remain open.
Hood Road from the Main Gate to Battalion Avenue will be closed from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.
Battalion Avenue from Clear Creek to 16th Street will be closed from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m., but north-south cross traffic will be permitted.
Parking lots in the immediate vicinity of III Corps Headquarters and 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters will also be closed from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m.
III Corps and U.S. Army Garrison civilian employees have been granted administrative leave and were asked not to arrive at work until 1 p.m. on Tuesday because of the visit.
All regular Garrison installation services will be closed from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Fort Hood said.
Carl. R. Darnall Army Medical Center urged staff and patients to arrive early Tuesday.
Patients should take either the 79th Street exit or the Clear Creek exit to enter Fort Hood.
Cheney arrived in Dallas Monday for a two-day visit to Texas.
He planned no appearances there.
After his Fort Hood event, Cheney flies to Midland where he will attend a private reception for Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.
