(February 26, 2008)—Waco Firefighters responded to a call of smoke in a basement at the McLennan County Detention Center in the 500 block of Columbus Avenue early Tuesday morning.
The call came in around 12:30am.
Firefighters found moderate smoke in the the basement of the facility. One sprinkler head did activate, containing a small fire that was determined to have started in a dryer.
Assistant Fire Chief Don Yeager, of the Waco Fire Department said he had two major concerns in this particular fire, the first being the safety of his personnel fighting a fire in a locked and secure facility such as a detention center.
Yeager's second concern was the lack of radio communication presented with this particular facility.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation; it is not know if the fire was set intentionally or accidentally.
There were no injuries reported and the facility did not have to be evacuated.
