Wildfire Threat Forces Evacuations In Small Texas Town Save Email Print

A | A | A

(February 28, 2008)--Some evacuations have taken place in Archer City due to the high fire danger and fears that an earlier wildfire could flare up.

Archer County Judge Gary Beesinger said Thursday afternoon the jail has been evacuated, along with the 45 or so residents of a nursing home.

Schools have been closed for the day.

Officials are monitoring a fire that had been put out, less than 2 miles from town, but crews are concerned that it could re-ignite.

Archer City is a town of about 1,800, located 110 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

Windy conditions across Texas this week have whipped up wildfires that have burned tens of thousands of acres including one Thursday in Bosque County.

At least four fire departments and units from the Texas Forest Service were fighting the large grassfire Thursday afternoon.

Reports indicate the fire was burning along County Road 2800, just north of the town of Morgan.

Bosque County is under an outdoor burning ban, but it is not known how the fire started.

Meanwhile a large grass fire southwest of Bexar County has forced the evacuation of a middle school.

The Texas Forest Service says at least 12 fires that had started earlier in the week across the state are still burning.
