(February 28, 2008)—Sounding like anything but an underdog, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told hundreds of supporters Thursday afternoon in Waco that a win in Texas could change the dynamics of the GOP presidential race.

Waco’s fire marshal said 660 people were in the meeting room at the Waco Hilton to hear Huckabee speak.

As many as 500 more were outside the hotel.

Huckabee is far behind frontrunner John McCain both in the delegate count and in the polls in Texas.

He’s counting on strong turnout particularly among social conservatives to reverse his fortunes in the March 4 primary.

“If we win Texas I will be on my way to becoming the 44th president of the United States,” he said.

Huckabee is sending the message that not all Republicans are ready to back frontrunner McCain.

The Associated Press reports the Texas Republican Party is controlled by social and religious conservatives who usually drive primary voting.

The race between Huckabee and McCain could be closer than in other big states.

Polls have shown McCain ahead in Texas, but not always by large margins.

AP reports the GOP bloc also has been at odds with Republican Gov. Rick Perry, who backed Rudy Giuliani, then McCain, and has deviated from the group on state policy issues.

McCain's campaign contends it isn't worried about Texas and notes that he won in South Carolina, another state with a social conservative base.

A CNN-Opinion Research Corp. poll conducted over the weekend showed McCain ahead in Texas with 56 percent to Huckabee's 31 percent.

Huckabee was campaigning Thursday Texarkana, Waco and Amarillo.

I was so glad my husband and I attending the rally today. I told him thats what I would like to do for our 24 wedding anniversary. We are so excited to go and vote for Mike Huckabee. I hope all of Texas gets to hear him in a debate with McCain before Tuesday.

GO Huckabee!!! Texas, please shock the country, especially the media, and keep this race going!!!

Hearing Huckabee today made me even prouder that I have already voted for him. There were 4 generations of my family at this rally today all supporting Huckabee. I pray that TEXANS will send a message that we are VALUES voters and don't appreciate the media trying to convince us that the Republican race is all over. Many of us in Texas STILL want to hear a one-on-one debate between Huckabee and McCain. Show us, Republican Party leaders, the choice that is still there & let voters make up their own minds. Please give us a debate!!

If we were in at a football game right now...the Hickabee cheerleaders would be shouting "Hold That Line!!!" Cause that's all we need to do...keep McCain from scoring and he'll mess himself up...in fact his own McCain Feingold issue is doing that already...go out and vote...vote for Huckabee...

I love the comment Gov Huckabee made the other day when a reporter asked him about all the recent endorsements for McCain coming from the GOP establishment. Mike said "What are these people saying - that they were for him all along but just forgot to tell him?" It just goes to show how many sheep we have in office. The GOP has become a cheerleader squad for the party. It should be a group of elected servants of the people.

I like in SC and I can tell you that McCain only won in SC by 3% because the conservative votes were still being split with Thompson and Romney. McCain would have lost here by a large % without Thompson who got 16% of the conservative vote and still.. Huck only lost by 3%
