Local Woman Charged In Mother’s 2008 Stabbing Death

By: Paul J. Gately Email

WACO (June 30, 2012)—Yalanda Rene Leonard Lind, the daughter of a woman who was stabbed to death in 2008, was arrested Friday and charged with her mother’s death.

Lind, 37, was ordered held on $1 million bond, charged with capital murder in connection with the October 13, 2008 stabbing death of Rebecca Leonard, then 52, who died at her home in the 3900 block of Watt Avenue.

Lind was named in a sealed indictment Thursday and arrested Friday by Waco police officers.

Her arrest came one day after the man she claimed actually did the stabbing pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the same incident.

Jeremy Lee Lowrey, 28, who is McLennan County longest serving jail inmate, having served more than 1,350 days in county jail awaiting trial, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of murder in connection with Leonard’ death and to attempted capital murder in connection with the stabbing of Leonard’s boyfriend, Jerry Patterson, during what prosecutors called a home invasion at Leonard's Watt Avenue home.

Lowrey initially was charged with capital murder in Leonard’s death but Judge Matt Johnson sentenced Lowrey on the lesser charge of murder after a recommendation from the state and following consent from the victim's family.

Lowrey also was sentenced to a concurrent life term on the attempted capital murder charge.

It was not clear what led police and prosecutors to seek the indictment against Lind so long after the murder was committed, but it was known that Lowrey was intensely de-briefed over two sessions after he agreed to plead guilty.

Lowrey was indicted in September 2009 for capital murder and attempted capital murder and has been held since then in lieu of bonds totaling $1 million.

Lind, who reported the incident, told officers she stayed the night at her mother's home and awoke to find her ex-boyfriend, Lowrey, standing in her bedroom.

She told police that her mother and Patterson entered the bedroom and were attacked by the knife-wielding assailant who fled before police arrived.

Patterson was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.

Officers arrested Lowrey later that morning near the intersection of West Waco Drive and North 42nd Street.
