Michael Nnamdi Nweke, 48, of Georgia, is charged with Attempted Theft over $20,000 in connection with an ongoing investigation of what is commonly known as the Nigerian Money Correspondence Scam, Killeen police said Tuesday.
The victim was a local resident who received an award notification that said he had won a lottery prize from a location ion Spain.
The victim was told he had to pay fees for different stages of collecting his winnings, police said.
Funds were solicited from the victim ranging from $750 to $3,000 on the pretense of making arrangements to deposit the winnings into the victim’s bank account.
Nweke was arrested after coming to Killeen after arrangements were made with the victim to collect still more money before the alleged jackpot was deposited.
At that point, police said, the victim became suspicious and called police.
Nweke remained in the Bell County Jail Tuesday.
