WACO (July 4, 2012)—Thieves struck a construction site overnight Tuesday and used a backhoe to smash into a storage building from which they stole tools, construction equipment and a large amount of copper.
Investigating Waco police officers at the scene in the 2400 block of New Road said sometime between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning burglars cut through a perimeter fence on the southwest side of the site and drove some type of vehicle inside.
The thieves were able to get access to a parked backhoe, which they then used to smash the doors of a storage building.
Once inside the building they stole various types of construction equipment, tools and a large quantity of copper.
The thieves then cut through another fence to make their get away, police said.
Workers reported the break in at about 6:30 a.m. as they were reporting for work, the officer said.
The value of the items stolen was not disclosed.
