On March 8, 1998 a Vietnam veteran held police, county, state and federal authorities at bay for 14 hours after breaking in the VA Regional Office at 7th and Clay in Waco. He claimed to have four pounds of C-4 and a high-powered rifle, but no explosives were found after he surrendered.

On March 8, 1862, during the Civil War, the ironclad CSS Virginia (formerly USS Merrimack) rammed and sank the USS Cumberland and inflicted heavy damage on the USS Congress, both frigates, off Newport News, Virginia.

The militant Islamic group Hamas vowed revenge after one of its founding members and three bodyguards were killed in an Israeli helicopter attack in Gaza; the Israeli army promised to strike the militants again.

House Democrats unveiled legislation that would require the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the fall of 2008; the White House said President Bush would veto it. In his first news conference since taking over command of U.S. forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus said insurgents were seeking to intensify attacks and that additional U.S. forces would be sent to areas where militant groups were regrouping. President Bush arrived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, as he began a 6-day tour of Latin America.
