(March 8, 2008)—The Department of Public Safety is stepping up patrols in South Texas as the annual spring break rush to the beach begins.
They’ll be watching particularly for travelers who aren’t using safety belts, speeders and drunken drivers.
“The drinking age in Texas is 21. When it comes to underage drinking and driving, Texas has a zero tolerance law,” said Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the DPS.
“If you’re under 21, you face criminal charges and suspension of your license if you drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in your system.”
The DPS estimates a first DWI offense costs at least $3,180 in fines and fees and could cost as much as $17,000.
