(March 8, 2008)—The Department of Public Safety is stepping up patrols in South Texas as the annual spring break rush to the beach begins.

They’ll be watching particularly for travelers who aren’t using safety belts, speeders and drunken drivers.

“The drinking age in Texas is 21. When it comes to underage drinking and driving, Texas has a zero tolerance law,” said Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the DPS.

“If you’re under 21, you face criminal charges and suspension of your license if you drive with any detectable amount of alcohol in your system.”

The DPS estimates a first DWI offense costs at least $3,180 in fines and fees and could cost as much as $17,000.

DPS can stop them all as far as I'm concerned. These kids are crazy and reckless. There will be fatalities again this year. DPS is trying to prevent as many as possible and we should be thanking them.

I love going to South Padre. But this time of year, I wouldn't think of going anywhere near there. Spring breakers go completely INSANE for a week or 2. Last year I read that they waited up to 6 hrs just to cross the causeway and get to their partying. I'm sure the parties started way before they crossed that bridge! DPS IS DOING THE RIGHT THING FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE WHO DRIVES.
