Taliban Claims Responsibility For Downing U.S. Military Helicopter

As many as 20 people may have been aboard a CH-47 Chinook transport helicopter that went down Tuesday in a rugged mountainous area of eastern Afghanistan, a U.S. official said.

The Taliban claimed credit for downing the helicopter, which was being used to transport reinforcements for counterterrorism operations.

A provincial governor told The Associated Press that a Taliban rocket brought the helicopter down, but the U.S. military, in a statement, says the cause of the crash is not clear and “the status of survivors is unknown.”

In April, 15 U.S. service members and three American civilians died when a Chinook crashed in a sandstorm in Afghanistan.
