MEXIA (July 31, 2012)—A downtown building in Mexia collapsed overnight, but the town’s fire chief says no one was injured.
Neighbors Cleaners, a longtime Mexia business, was left in rubble after a significant portion of the roof and the front of the building collapsed at around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Mexia Fire Chief Clayton Shivers said.
Shivers said the staff at the dry cleaners had taken off for summer vacation and no one was inside the building when it came down.
There was no indication Tuesday morning why the building fell.
The building sits at 209 E. Main Street, across from Mexia City Hall, Shivers said.
Two engine companies and an ambulance were at the scene for two to three hours.
Main Street had been cleared of debris by early Tuesday morning, but Shivers said it would take some time to clean up the collapsed building.
The collapse did major damage to the building and to its contents, Shivers said.
