Two Teenagers Seriously Injured In Early-Afternoon Crash Save Email Print

A | A | A

(March 17, 2008)—Two Bellmead teenagers who were riding in the bed of a pickup truck were seriously injured early Monday afternoon in a collision between the truck and a minivan that flipped the truck on its side.

Ivan Segura, 15, and Issac Loredo, 16, were both thrown from the truck in the collision around 12:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of North 18th Street and Homan Avenue.

They both suffered what police described as incapacitating injuries.

They were taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

Benjamin Segura, 11, of Bellmead, who was riding in the front seat of the truck, was also taken to Hillcrest.

The driver of the truck, Inocencia Seguar, 38, of Bellmead, told officers he was injured, but refused hospital treatment, police said.

The driver of the minivan, Carla Denise Browning, 38, of Waco was not injured.

Police said the minivan struck the truck, which was southbound on North 18th Street.

The truck went into a skid and then flipped onto its right side.

No complaints have been filed, police said.

People make mistakes no matter what ethnic background they are from. I am sure the people that allowed these children to ride in the back are feeling very guilty, they do not need people judging them because of their race. The Holy Bible says that God is not a respecter of persons, so why should we be? I pray that God will give these boys a speedy recovery and peace to all people involved.

This is my 2nd comment on this story. It does not matter right now if these childen were black, white, hispanic, asian, green or yellow, these children need our prayers. I am surprised an update has not been done, as I would like to know the status of these young men. If anyone knows any new information, please comment. When I was young in the Killeen area, it was legal and fun. Now that I look back, it scares me that this situation could have happened to me. I agree with CW, quit the bickering about race and who's fault it was, JUST PRAY! And pray for yourselves....

I thought I would find messages of comfort to the families and get well wishes here but somehow this turned into people arguing about mexicans?! You should all be ashamed! This event had a bad outcome for all those involved. When will people learn to be accepting and thoughtful. How would you feel if this was your family? God bless those boys regardless of why they were in the bed of that truck and hopefully they will go one to live their lives having learned from this accident.

umm...When I was little I rode in the back of a truck all the time and the last time I looked in the mirror I was white. I know it is a stupid place to ride, so don't fatigue your fingers by typing how horrible that is. I just want to point out that it is not just hispanics that ride in the back of a truck/pick up. I saw a hispanic man riding a motorcycle yesterday...maybe they are the only people who ride those.

Posted by: ME Location: waco on Mar 20, 2008 at 11:34 AM
Anonymous and whoever agrees- I am Hispanic and no I have not placed my child in the back of a truck...you people are just prejudice to the Hispanic race. you people who play the race card on everything are just a disgrace to this society. and thats that I have nothing else to say.

Posted by: Me Location: Waco on Mar 20, 2008 at 11:29 AM
A Mom...its called you being prejudice sweety. Such a great role model for your children huh..lol. Why I said mind your business. People will make bad decisions regardless of what has happend...you played the race card. you have showed your true self.

Posted by: John Location: Cove on Mar 19, 2008 at 07:01 PM
What has happened to these boys is tragic. That's why you DON'T RIDE IN THE BED OF A TRUCK. I too have seen hispanic families in single cab trucks with young children riding in the bed. I'm sure when the police see this, they are pulled over.

Posted by: J Location: killeen on Mar 19, 2008 at 06:44 PM
You ppl who say all races ride in truck beds haven't been in killeen lately.

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 19, 2008 at 06:31 PM
maybe Me in waco is a mexican who has put hes/her kids in back of a truck a time or two ;)

Posted by: nn Location: temple on Mar 19, 2008 at 05:41 PM
Babygirl)))) i am a man i work from home and make 150,000 a year i do not have to work like mexicans out side in the heat.

Posted by: A Mom Location: Temple on Mar 19, 2008 at 05:29 PM
Me in waco ... Grow Up! Yes, I hope these boys have a full recovery. Turn my head and mind my own business? WOW, such a concerned citizen you are for children's safety!! ummm, it's called being a hypocrite...........lol

Posted by: Babygirl Location: texas on Mar 19, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Ron, Mexican come here to do your work. And YES MEXICO HAS LAWS what do you know. Cause all youll like to talk.

Posted by: Ron Location: cen tx on Mar 19, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Babygirl, what does mexicans coming here because U.S. are lazy & foodstamps have to do with kids in the bed of a truck? It's illegal, period. And spare us the "Mexico has laws" lol ... not with driving they don't!

Posted by: Babygirl Location: texas on Mar 19, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Yes I understand the concern of young kids riding in the back of pickup truck I am to. But it is not only mexicans doing this. Last year a 19 old young man died from the same thing.

Posted by: ME Location: waco on Mar 19, 2008 at 04:02 PM
A MoM then turn your head and mind your own business...don't play the race card. it just shows who you really are and what you really care about as a person. Like I said the most important thing right now is this boys recovery not that he happens to be hispanic.

Posted by: Anon Location: Moody on Mar 19, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Mexican road crews and construction workers do this all the time too.

Posted by: A Mom Location: Temple on Mar 19, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Sorry, but every one I've seen in the back of a truck has been hispanic. I know what I see. Large hispanic families with 4 or 5 kids in the truck bed, driving in downtown Temple. One time a small girl was sitting on the truck tool box! Like I said, I cringe when I see this. If you can't fit your family in the front of your truck where they are more safe, then buy a large car!

Posted by: Babygirl Location: texas on Mar 19, 2008 at 02:50 PM
There you'll go always saying things about Mexicans. What do they do to you'll. They come to work because men that are from the U.S are lazy. Just waiting for the food stamps to come in. This young man was in an accident it could happen to a whit person or any one. I see white people and every kids of people riding in the back of pick ups NOT ONLY MEXICANS. Yes there are laws in Mexico for your info!!!!lol

Posted by: Tex on Mar 19, 2008 at 12:05 PM
Mop, there are trucks (pickups) that are 1 ton dual back wheels .. (6 wheels). Trucks are classified by weight and pickups only mean it has a bed of some sort.

Posted by: ME Location: Waco on Mar 19, 2008 at 11:32 AM
"A Mom" what do laws in Mexico and hispanic have anything to do with it. Why do people pull out the race card. And for your info the young man that happens to be in the hospital, Issac Loredo" is bi racial hispanic/anglo. His health is whats important right now not that he happen to be a certain race.. Everyone from every race has done it and I see it. regardless yes it is dangerous and yes these boy made a bad choice by riding in the back.

Posted by: A Mom Location: Temple on Mar 19, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Most people (even children) I see in the bed of trucks riding around are hispanic. I'm sure there's no law against it in Mexico. Very dangerous ... I cringe when I see children back there!

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Mar 19, 2008 at 10:05 AM
If you're a Texan, you drive a Truck. If you're a yankee, you drive a pickup truck. (same vehicle folks)

Posted by: mop Location: here on Mar 19, 2008 at 09:59 AM
a truck has ten tires and a pick up has four.

Posted by: MRS REED Location: waco on Mar 19, 2008 at 08:30 AM
Im with AC, what is the difference in truck and a pickup truck? And this accident is still not going to stop other individuals from riding in the back of PICKUP TRUCKS, people have always been doing it and will continue to do it.

Posted by: AC Location: East Texas on Mar 18, 2008 at 09:59 PM
It is very dangerous to ride in the back of a truck, but it happened and I am sure lessons will be learned. At this point I think all involved deserve prayers for speedy recovery....I am in need of vehicle 101...What may I ask is the difference in a truck and pick up?? I have even heard pick up truck...Please inform me of the correct word to use when talking about a vehicle on 4 wheels that does not have a trunk, but has a bed.

Posted by: James Location: Waco on Mar 18, 2008 at 05:53 PM
Depending on the age yes its is against the law for children to ride in the back of a truck

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 18, 2008 at 04:01 PM
mrs reed do you not understand the point. the law should not have to tell you what to do. why would anybody ride in back of a pick up. and by the way a truck and pick up is not the same.

Posted by: J Location: Hughes on Mar 18, 2008 at 03:33 PM
It is not illegal in TX. It should be though. Its so dangerous. I drove past the accident after it happened and those boys are lucky. The wreck was very bad.

Posted by: TX MOM Location: Central TX on Mar 18, 2008 at 03:21 PM
I pray these young boys will be OK. I am sure the father and the driver of the minivan are blaming themselves. Regardless, someone got hurt and PRAYERS are needed at this time.

Posted by: Rachel Location: China Spring on Mar 18, 2008 at 02:48 PM
In Texas, it is illegal for children under the age of 18 to ride in the bed of a truck (it used to be 12). Here is a link that shows the regulations for other states: http://www.iihs.org/laws/cargoAreas.aspx

Posted by: MRS REED Location: waco on Mar 18, 2008 at 11:54 AM
Yeah it's against the law and your point being what? I see people riding in the back of trucks all the time and if I see it I know the police see them!

Posted by: Sheila Location: Waco on Mar 18, 2008 at 08:42 AM
Isn't it against the law for anyone to ride in the bed of a truck?
