(March 18, 2008)--A lawyer and companion of Texan Anna Nicole Smith told a court Tuesday he was surprised to learn an overdose killed her son.
Howard K. Stern says he never suspected that 20-year-old Daniel Smith was abusing drugs.
Stern was the final witness at the inquest in the Bahamas to determine what killed Daniel Smith in September 2006.
The young man had been visiting his mother and his newborn sister at a hospital in Nassau.
Stern's account contradicted the portrayal given earlier by the infant's father.
Larry Birkhead described Daniel Smith as troubled and apparently struggling with drugs and alcohol.
Houston-born Anna Nicole Smith died 13 months ago in Florida of an accidental drug overdose.
She lived in Mexia for several years, where her son was born.
