Hispanic children make up 47 percent of the 4.7 million students
in Texas public classrooms. The board is set to take a preliminary vote March 27th on new standards for curriculum in reading and writing.
State Representative Abel Herrero asked board members yesterday to hold off, saying experts familiar with Hispanic culture should get the chance to offer their own suggestions.
But board chairman Don McLeroy said the time for experts to
weigh in passed long ago.
McLeroy also said he's shocked by accusations that he and other
board members were trying to shortchange Hispanic students.
Teachers and other English language and reading experts can
offer comments on the 78-page proposal at the public hearing next
week.
