AUSTIN (September 5, 2012)—The Third Court of Appeals in Austin has upheld the convictions of two former Fort Hood soldiers and a woman in connection with the 2008 slaying of another Fort Hood soldier.
Former Pfc. Kyle Moesch former Sgt. John Valdez, Jr., and Kathryn Nellie Briggs all were convicted of capital murder in April 2011 after a jury found the three worked together in the brutal slaying of Staff Sgt. Ryan Sullivan.
Sullivan was found dead in the early morning hours of Oct. 11, 2008 after he failed to show up for duty and prosecutors at trial said he was killed for his $100,000 Army insurance policy.
Prosecutors alleged that Briggs conspired with Valdez, who was also a soldier, to kill Sullivan in order to collect the murdered man's life insurance policy, of which Briggs was a beneficiary.
Moesch, who was also a soldier at the time of the slaying, was named as a conspirator.
All three defendants were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.
