CWO 2 Christopher Chabot Martin, 31, died Monday night in the crash of a 4th Infantry Division AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopter, Fort Hood said Wednesday.

A second soldier who was aboard the helicopter when it went down during a training flight north of Lake Belton was treated for injuries and later released from Darnall Army Community Hospital.

Martin was posthumously promoted to Chief Warrant Officer 2 after the crash, Fort Hood said.

Martin was born in New York, but grew up and attended schools in Grapevine where he graduated from high school in 1993, Fort Hood said, and considered himself a native Texan.

He joined the Army shortly after graduation.

“I would like to extend my condolences to the family of Warrant Officer Chris Martin,” said Col. Donald M. MacWillie, commander of the 4th Infantry Division Aviation Brigade.

“Mr. Martin was a brave 4th Infantry Division Soldier who died while training and preparing to do whatever the President calls us to do.

“He was an energetic and a very focused warrior and he’ll be greatly missed by the entire Eagle team. We’ll do everything to take care of the families involved in this tragedy,” MacWillie said.

The brigade halted flight operations for 24 hours after the crash in what MacWillie said is a routine procedure after aircraft accidents.

Normal operations resumed Wednesday morning.

The crash is being investigated by a III Corps team as well as an Accident Investigation Team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Ala.

It was the second crash involving a 4th ID helicopter in eight months.

Seven soldiers including a brigadier general died in November when their Black Hawk helicopter hit a television tower cable in a thick fog about 30 miles northeast of the post.

The soldiers were en route to the Red River Army Depot near Texarkana to check on the progress of repair work on 4th ID vehicles in preparation for the division’s return to Iraq later this year.
