TX Sex Offenders' Work Information Soon Open To Public Save Email Print

A | A | A

(March 24, 2008)- The Texas Department of Public Safety will soon offer another piece of information about the state's registered sex offenders - where they work.

No definite date has been set but Texas DPS officials say residents will be able to sign on the departments Sex Offender Registry website and find out where sex offenders are employed in their area.

The change is the result of a $1.2 million software upgrade and a federal requirement.

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 requires states to obey a number of disclosure rules by 2010 or they may lose some federal funding.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbot has been pushing for the same measure since last year.

About 47,000 registered sex offenders live in Texas. Information such as their birth dates, current addresses, and even shoe size are provided to the public.

DPS officials say the website is expected to be up sometime by the Summer 2008.

I have a question, maybe someone can answer? Are these teenagers names being put on the RSO list as soon as they are charged OR after they have been found guilty and convicted? There's a big difference there.

For all the people posting about teenage sex... When my son was a senior in highschool, he and all his friends knew what the word "JailBait" meant, (that cute freshman girl)! Educate your teenagers! For all who don't agree with this law, have you never driven by a house that has a BIG sign in the front yard that says," Sex Offender Lives Here"? I do feel sorry for the teenage boy that's put on the list but I feel more for all the innocent little children that have been sexually abused. Until the laws are changed, I'll say again... Educate Your Teenagers.

Gerry you are so very right. The degree of offenses are categorized in one. There is no justice in destroying a teenager for the rest of his life because of an over zealous D.A. office. There are RSO's that are on there because they took candid photos at the mall or at a beach. There are RSO's on there because of exposure with no contact. There are offenders on there because a jealous spouse was caught in an affair and cried rape. I really have problem with justice that has been in my opinion way abused in itself. I wish there was a more fair way of segregating the degrees and pray for all those placed in a group label.

Unfortunately sex offenders are allowed to be around our children. Knowing where they work will help. There are certain sex offenders allowed to participate in our local youth stock show and fair. It has been reported to local law officials and for some reason nothing has been done to protect the youth of our small community. Personally I believe anything that will help a parent identify a sex offender should be done icluding where they live, work, worship, shop etc.. I am sure the folks that disagree with this have never dealt with the issue on a personal level or had to deal with a 4yr. old having night mares after being a victim of sexual predators. Stricter laws should be enforced and adhered too. Employers need to be aware they have sexual predators working for them as their child could be the next victim, I hope and pray they will never have to experience such tragedy in their own family. Thank you......

Thank you so much for the information about sex offenders. My daughter and I are trying to put away the man that sexually abused her. This helps me in knowing that I can know where he is and what job he is doing. Thank you, Thank you...

What is the purpose of knowing where a RSO works? They aren't allowed to work where children are going to gather anyway? So what purpose does it serve to know that Joe Shmoe is working at Don's Garage? Were you going to use Don's Garage to drop your kids off for Don to watch them, but then found out Joe is working there?

This has touched families everywhere in one form or fashion. Posting any more information that is out there is leading to people getting hurt even more. Because you can't changed what was done in the past to apease people for what will happen in the future. Get a grip and let GOD HANDLE thing you can't control. This is not the answer.

I agree some with Gerry. I think when we hear the words "Sex Offender", we automatically think of people like the guy working at the daycare in Killeen that sexually assualted a baby. But, I do think these kids who are having consensual sex and are 3-4 yrs age difference, need to be aware of law. I wouldn't want a 16 yr old boy messing around my 13 yr old daughter. But to be marked for life ... no I don't agree to that.

I enjoy the diversity of opinions. I also see the events of society labeling a group into one category. I would feel safer in a room of convicted sex offenders than with most of the underhanded coniving uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters of most of you people complaining. You dont know about your own household behind the scenes. They just have not gotten caught yet. At least with a registered offenders they know they are under the gun every moment of every day of the rest of his or her life. Yes I did say 'her' believe it or not there are female sex offenders. Honest from temple tell your cousin he or she has to be removed from society. Come on people get real. Why are the common habitual theives posted. Don't they continue on with their practice even after getting caught several time? The drug dealers never learn from getting a conviction. The drugs kill our children every day. Don't you people read what the world is doing? Is one sin greater than the other in God"s eyes? He is saddened

As a former police officer I am certainly for any tool that would allow the general public more information about "dangerous" sex offenders. I feel this is the key word. Those listed on the site who had "relations" with their girlfriend or boyfriend when they were close in age and the act was consensual, common sense says they have no place on this site.

Posted by: RatherNotSay Location: TX on Mar 25, 2008 at 01:42 PM
To John E in Salado, Texas - how dare you make a comment such as this? Right now there are accused "SEX" offenders who did nothing more than just be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know of several cases where a 18 YO has a record because he turned 18 before his girlfriend of many years turned 16 and he was prosecuted. Think back to your HS days - did you happen to like any of the Freshmen girls - well guess what I guess you are a Sex Offender - because you were well over 3 years older than them..... and yes that is what our sick society has come to - just go down to your local Juvenile DA's office and see what that sicko woman is prosecuting......

This is great news , in my book a sex offender is equivalent to someone who commited murder , that is exactly what they are doing to those children they are violating , this needs to be public knowledge and the people need to be removed from society permanently!

Posted by: Anita Location: Temple on Mar 25, 2008 at 12:47 PM
I wonder what percentage of the 47,000 registered sex offenders fall under the catagory ppl are posting about (the 17 yr old boyfriend and just under 17 girlfriend)? My opinion, the majority are probably the online child preditor. These sick adult men that lure young girls online to meet them for sex and were caught.

familywatchdog.us great website! enjoy!!

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Mar 25, 2008 at 11:32 AM
I don't see why people are so worried about this. Alot of info on registered sex offenders is already out there, name, where they live, even shoe size! Why not info on where they work? I agree somewhat about the gf/bf thing should be looked into. But, if your son, grandson or nephew has been convicted, you already know it... No Surprise.

Posted by: Also Concerned Location: Waco on Mar 25, 2008 at 10:53 AM
I agree with "Concerned"and "Citizen" While this sounds like a great idea on the surface, it should be applied with a little judgement. Someone who 'dumbed out' and has not repeated any sex offense should not be forever hounded by their mistake. At the very least, they should be eligible to be dropped from the records five years or so after serving their sentence.

Posted by: Lisa Location: Waco on Mar 25, 2008 at 10:35 AM
Yeah, people think it's great until it's their son, grandson, or nephew who is on this list for having sex with his gf when he was over 17 and she was just under. Not all "sex offenders" are rapists or child molesters.

Want be titled sex offenders for long. I see Rich Sex Offenders coming soon. Can anyone say "Class Action Law Suit". I see taxes going up in the State of Texas.

Posted by: concerned Location: waco on Mar 25, 2008 at 08:12 AM
i think this is a good idea to keep in touch with the people that are are risk to others. but you have to relized not all of them are bad. what about the ones who did something stupid years ago that was something where they never touched anyone and have never did anything since. when you go and look at that stuff it tells you what risk they are. i want to know that the people with risks are doing what there suppose to be. i dont think they all should be jugde by a title because not all of them are bad people. people make mistakes and learn from them.

Posted by: Citizen Location: TX on Mar 25, 2008 at 04:47 AM
Be careful where you cast your stones. You will probably hit one of your relatives. Sex offenders don't put babies in microwaves and turn the power on. Sex offenders don't throw children off overpasses into oncoming traffic. Sex offenders don't murder their children by shooting and stabbing them. But, PARENTS do!! Where is the web site that lists these people and where they work? When DPS runs this site, you will not be able to wash the blood from your hands on this one!

Posted by: John E. Location: Salado, TX on Mar 24, 2008 at 03:55 PM
There is a much easier way to keep track of sex offenders. It is called, "burial". I say we bring back firing squads to take care of these sickos and then bury them afterwards. Case closed.
