Central Texas Student Sentenced In Brutal Killing Of Prized Horse Save Email Print
Reporter: By Meredith Stancik, KBTX-TV

(March 27, 2008)--It's an ending to a story that touched the Brazos Valley community.

In 2006, two area college students killed a Bryan woman's prized horse after returning from a party to their apartment complex, next to the horse’s pasture.

A year and a half later, one of those students is serving jail time and the other was convicted Wednesday of the crime.

Texas A&M student Walter Williams of Killeen pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and received 120 days in jail and five years probation.

It's a lighter sentence than his accomplice received in October.
Kenneth Peterson of College Station was convicted of two felonies, including animal cruelty.

He attended Blinn College in nearby Brenham, according to published reports.

He's currently serving nine months in state jail and then he'll be on probation for five years.

The sentences were not as stiff as the horse's owner Darla McCrady had hoped, but she told News Three she's glad the entire ordeal is over.

Darla McCrady's passion has always been for her horses. However, two years ago, that passion, was almost wiped away.

"I was not going to ride any longer," McCrady said.

In October 2006, Darla found her prized horse, Chic, dead in her backyard.

"She had two big cuts to the throat and one was pretty much cut in half," McCrady said.

"You could see where blood was and where struggle was and you could see where she died."

Authorities said Peterson and Williams used a polo mallet and golf club to beat the horse.

Then, authorities said, Williams fatally stabbed Chic in the chest with a broken golf club.

It's a nightmarish scene that still haunts McCrady.

"During the trial you hear the sounds the horse made when she was being killed, you see faces, you hear the story when she died, and that made it even worse," McCrady said.

A year and a half later though she has recaptured her love for horses.

"I think now that we have both trials out of the way, both have pleaded guilty, been sentenced, I think it's time to move forward," McCrady said.

And even though she's moved on, she says she'll never forget.

What a joke! 120 days. These guys are psychos. I agree, today it's animals, tomorrow they're serial killers! Lock them up and throw away the key!

Today animals, tomorrow little kids or women. These two perps need to be euthanized like the rabid dogs they are.

You know, if they held liberal judges liable for future crimes committed by such obviously violent/heartless individuals, we wouldn't have such problems.

We used to hang people for horse theft. There's no telling what would've been done to these 2, BEFORE they were hung! No justice here now.

I believe anyone who would hurt an animal, child or elderly person desserves to receive the same treatment, but first they need to be rendered as defenseless. These sick minds will create another horrific act some time in the future if not nipped in the bud first - NOW!!! Maybe they should be castrated so as to prevent future reproduction.

THESE YOUNG MEN ARE A MENACE TO SOCIETY AND DESERVE THE DEATH SENTENCE. WHAT A SHAME.

These guys should tied up in a stall and have horses repeatedly kick them for hours on end.

What on earth is wrong with our justice system? This type of cimminal will kill a human next! We slap them on the hands and let them go.... what is wrong with this?

that's not near enough time in jail, plus they ought to beat those two thugs within an inch of their life before sending them to jail.

Posted by: EW Location: Central TX on Mar 28, 2008 at 12:04 PM
I do not think that the punishment fits the crime here. There should have been much more jail time handed down as well as the probation given. They should have certainly recieved a few whacks with a golf club and a polo mallet as well!!

You know, people should have respect for all life forms. God put pets on earth to be companions to us. Cruelty to animals and children or anyone for that matter should be outlawed to the highest degree. Where is Superman when we need him?

How can people be so heartless. Just reading this story made me sick to my stomach. Someone that can hurt children, the elderly or animals cant be human.

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Mar 28, 2008 at 07:35 AM
What happened here?? 120 days in jail for this horrific crime? What kind of person cuts a horse's throat almost in half with a polo mallet?? I guess the one that beat the horse with a golf club got the 120 days. This is wrong and sickening!
