(March 27, 2008)—Almost two months to the day after the McGregor City Council voted not to disband the town’s police department, the community’s new police chief and assistant police chief arrested one of the area’s most-wanted fugitives Thursday.
Police Chief Steve Foster and Assistant Police Chief James Burson found Paul Jeffrey Valentine putting a battery in a car Thursday afternoon and arrested him without incident.
Valentine was on the Waco Crime Stoppers’ ten most-wanted list for forgery and theft.
He was taken to the McLennan County Jail.
Foster is a former Texas Ranger and Burson is a former Texas Department of Public Safety auto theft taskforce officer.
Between them, the two have 60 years of experience in law enforcement.
McGregor’s Police Department has had a half-dozen police chiefs in the past decade and that instability along with budget concerns figured in the consideration of the proposal to disband the department and to turn over law enforcement responsibility to the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office.
But in late January, the council rejected the proposal to disband the 12-member force.
A week later, Police Chief Ron Wadkins and Lt. Chris Molina resigned.
Foster and Burson told News Ten Thursday they’re working to replace the department’s fleet of police vehicles and to standardize equipment in a first step toward raising professional standards.
