(March 27, 2008)--A former Tarleton State University psychology professor who did research in child sexual abuse has been indicted on charges of possessing child pornography.

Thomas M. Dougherty, 42, of Stephenville turned himself in to the Erath County Sheriff's Office Thursday and was later released after posting a $30,000 bond.

The indictment was returned on Wednesday.

Authorities say Tarleton State University police began investigating in December after a student working near Dougherty's office found a suspicious computer folder with his name on it.

The student told campus police, who referred the case to the state Attorney General’s Cyber Crimes Unit.

Investigators say they uncovered several images and videos of child pornography on Dougherty's computer.

“This defendant, a psychologist specializing in sexually abused children, is charged with possessing child pornography,” Attorney General Abbott said.

Dougherty was a tenured professor specializing in learning disabilities, child and infant cognitive development and child sexual abuse.

Dougherty is no longer listed as a faculty member on the Web site of the university.

A home number listed for Dougherty has been disconnected.

Students or parents of students who have questions or information about the case may contact Sgt. Lee St. James with the Attorney General’s Office at (800) 252-8011.

My sentiments exactly, Patriot. Hmmm.... I guess this means we should steer clear of schools and universities and make sure our children are never left with a teacher.
