Police Identify Man Shot While Trying To Help Friend

(March 29, 2008)—Waco police Saturday identified the man who was shot in the head as he came to the aid of a friend who was being robbed outside a local convenience store as Rogelio Ramirez, 35, of Waco.

Police said Ramirez’ friend, Alfonso Gonzales, 38, of McGregor, was confronted by three men around 4:45 p.m. Friday as he walked out of Colbies at 2105 Dutton Ave.

Each of the men was dressed in black and each was armed with a handgun, police said.

The men demanded Gonzales’ money, and when he said he didn’t have any, one of the three pistol-whipped him, police said.

Ramirez saw what was happening and ran to help.

Police think he struck one of the robbers with a beer bottle that he was carrying.

In response, one of the three men shot Ramirez in the head, police said.

Ramirez is in the Intensive Care Unit of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.

The three robbers, who were black and in their mid-20s, remained at large Saturday.

They escaped in a light gray or silver four-door car that may have been an older model Chevrolet Malibu, police said.

Gonzales was not seriously injured in the hold-up.
