Texas agreed to take in an additional 25,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees from Louisiana and house them in San Antonio Thursday.
Robert Black, the spokesman for Gov. Rick Perry, said Louisiana asked Texas to provide shelter for more evacuees. He says Perry has spoken with the mayor and county judge in San Antonio to begin making the plans.
Black says no site's been selected for housing the refugees and no timetable's been determined for moving them.
He says more details were expected later in the day.
The refugees are in addition to about 25,000 already being moved into the Houston Astrodome, mostly from the Superdome in New Orleans.
Officials said access to the Astrodome would be limited to those who took shelter in the Superdome, but other refugees are arriving in Houston on their own, swelling the number of evacuees by an undetermined amount.
The process of transferring hurricane victims from New Orleans to Houston was interrupted Thursday morning when someone fired a shot at a military helicopter.
There were conflicting reports that the evacuation process had been suspended because of security concerns, but some officials said the transfer of refugees was continuing.
Trash fires and fights have erupted outside the Superdome, where crowds of angry people face heavily armed National Guard members across barricades as they wait to get on the buses for Houston.
Rescuers were expressing concern Thursday about violence and lawlessness in the city.
Looting has been widespread for several days and there were reports Thursday that angry survivors are now turning on rescuers.
The head of Acadian Ambulance, which is evacuating the sick and injured from the Superdome, says the evacuation won't resume until security officials "gain control.”
