(April 1, 2008)—Three construction workers employed by a Texas company were presumed dead Wednesday after falling from the Interstate 430 bridge over the Arkansas River in Little Rock, Ark.

A spokeswoman for Central Arkansas Water says the men were employed by Oscar Renda Contracting of Roanoke.

Authorities say three workers fell 40 to 50 feet to the river.

A sheriff's spokesman says four men were on a platform of scaffolding and one was able to hold on and call for emergency help before he was rescued.

The others fell into the river, as did some of the scaffolding.

The platform was big enough to hold the men, two generators and a welding machine.

The utility contracted with the Dallas-area company in April 2006 to install two sections of 30-inch-diameter waterlines under and across the bridge.
