(April 9, 2008)—Nintendo’s in-demand Wii video game system is the Army's newest recruiting hook in the Rio Grande Valley.

Seven billboards went up in the Texas-Mexico border region last month, urging those interested in serving their country and in winning the hard-to-find game system to send a text message on their cell phones.

A reply message directs them to an Army Web site where they can register to win the lone Wii being offered and visit a recruiter.

Bart Keyes, chief of advertising and public affairs at the Army's San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, which oversees recruitment in South Texas, says he first thought of offering an iPod, but his text-messaging vendor offered the Wii.

Even the lure of a Wii isn't enough to entice too many high-school grads into the Army.

Keyes says response to the campaign has been "very, very minimal" and they plan to end the offer next month.

I know this is not going to set well with most folks but I believe that the draft should never have been taken out. If your 18 and not going to collage, 2 years in our Armed Forces is not going to hurt you. Serve your country with pride. That is the way it was in my day. I was called to the service and did so with pride. Sure back then there were protesters just like now and these people knew the effect they had on the troops they would stop this nonsense and support them. Keep America strong...

I'm first in line. I think a video game is a wonderful trade for my life and when I'm dead, my mom can play with my Wii. They might not have a problem recruiting soldiers if this thing is Iraq would come to a halt. most people know they are just signing a death wish when the sign on the dotted line now.
