First Couple Plans To Say “So Long” To Crawford Save Email Print

A | A | A

(April 10, 2008)—President Bush arrived in Waco Thursday afternoon for a long weekend at his Central Texas ranch, just hours after First Lady Laura Bush made it clear that the ranch won’t be the first couple’s primary residence after Mr. Bush leaves office.

She told a group of schoolchildren in Thursday that she and the president plan to make their home in Dallas after Mr. Bush leaves office.

She told the children she was happy to be in Dallas and said that she and the president lived there about 14 years ago before Mr. Bush was elected governor.

The first couple has reportedly purchased property in upscale Highland Park on which to build a home, but an offhand remark the president made during a news conference last summer fueled speculation about whether the ranch was where he planned to head after leaving office.

“If you ever come down and visit the old, tired, me down there in Crawford,” Mr. Bush said in response to a question about sagging public support for the war in Iraq, “I will be able to say I looked in the mirror and made decisions based upon principle, not based upon politics.”

It’s likely the ranch could continue to serve as a getaway, just as Kennebunkport, Maine does for the president’s parents, who have a home in Houston and also maintain an apartment at the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station.

Mr. Bush’s election to the presidency drove up property prices and tourism in the Crawford area and his frequent visits to the ranch were generally good for business, although fewer tourists are stopping by these days.

The ranch has been the scene of meetings with key U.S. allies and next month it will host the wedding of first daughter Jenna Bush and her fiancé Henry Hager.

The White House has refused to release any details such as the setting on the ranch, who's invited and how many people will attend.

The Central Texas Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was moved up one week from May 10 to May 3 because the original date fell on the same day as the wedding.

Thousands of runners and walkers participate in the local race, which started in 2001.

But hotel and motel space are likely to be at a premium on the weekend of the wedding, and because many officials may be in town for the ceremony, security may also be an issue.

To Weird & CC: If you are in the army, you chose to be. This isn't the 60's vietnam and you're drafted. The military always trains for the prospect of war, that's their very purpose and definition. I thank you for volunteering your service to our country even through your complaints.

Dear A different citizen, Did you know that you have to claim that simulus check that you are to receive courtesy of President Bush on your income tax next year? You didn't. To show you how kind President Bush is, When you file for taxes next year, you will have to claim the amount you got from your stimulus payment this year. So, he didn't mail it to you from the goodness of his heart, or to help the ecomomy, you are getting part of your refund from next year early.

Posted by: Lauren Location: Coolidge on Apr 21, 2008 at 09:08 AM
So their not moving that far.

Posted by: Weird cause Location: Killeen on Apr 20, 2008 at 10:46 PM
LOL every soldier I know would rather be fighting a war people actually believe in and they can be proud of. This is not the case with Iraq, we were hoodwinked.

Posted by: CC Location: Killeen on Apr 20, 2008 at 10:42 PM
I personally would rather have illegal immigrants than this war. We are headed in the wrong direction and we need to change that for the future of our country. So Thankyou to Everyone who isn't voting for John McCain. I really hope we arn't let down.

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Apr 14, 2008 at 10:53 AM
You think the economy is bad now? If Obama or Clinton gets pres, they plan to give over 15 million illegal immigrants (amnesty). This includes anchor baby parents. They both stand for keeping families together. Does this include grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins? Where does it end?? The programs they plan to put in place (just for illegals), will come out of YOUR pockets. How does this help American citizens?? The burden Texans are going to bear for our millions of illegals won't compare to any other state except maybe California. I'm a republican, but, I stand for what's "best" for the country and Texas. Perry needs to go. He's done nothing for the citizens of Texas. I encourage everyone to do some research on ALL the candidates and see where they really stand on important issues. East Texas, if your family member isn't in Iraq, they'll be in Afghanistan/Pakistan. Terrorism has no boundries. How about sending your $600 back & help fix the mess? Yeah right!! Like I said ........

Posted by: A different citizen Location: East Texas on Apr 14, 2008 at 09:54 AM
To: Patriot. I have had family and friends over there and know that they do not come back the same and many soldiers know this war could have been avoided, you just have to ask the right ones. I do appreciate every soldier out there and keep them in my prayers on a daily bases, but that still does not make this war right and never will. And yes, I will be questioning George Bush on my way to the bank with that check because it would not have had to be mailed to me in the first place if the economy had not been torn apart. Why do you think his office suggested the stimulus bill in the first place? "Trying" to fix this huge mess up and to try to regain the trust of us Americans. It is not coming to us as a gift, it is coming to us on the belief we will run out to the gas station or to Wal Mart and spend it to "build" our economy back up...Come on, it will take a whole lot more than $600 per person to do that.

Posted by: anon Location: Temple on Apr 14, 2008 at 09:48 AM
I fail to see how Bush controls the gas prices?? He doesn't say "oil will be at this price today." And if Obama gets elected America will be ruined in 4 yrs because his allegiance is to "Black Africa." He's a smooth-talking wolf in sheep's clothing. It's become clear after reading these comments that Democrats will take any chance to bash a Republican. This story had nothing to do with his policies, just where he's gonna live. It would be real scary if a Democrat got elected. And just a side note, I'm married with three kids and I've gotten more money back on my taxes since a Republican has been in office than I ever did with a Democrat and I'm not rich by ANY means with $50000 a year. On the war, I'd rather not be in one but sometimes you have to. Ask almost any soldier and they'd say they'd rather fight it over there than over here. They tried to bring it here and Bush wouldn't sit for it. You should thank him, and more so our soldiers, for protecting you and your family.

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Apr 14, 2008 at 08:51 AM
Citizen in Waco,--you think Perry's doing any better?? Get Real! Fed UP--your comment doesn't count since you're too dumb to know where your caps lock key is. I wonder how many of you complaining about the war, actually (know) someone who has been or is there?? You're just a bunch of liberal Rosie O'Donnells who blame the Iraq war on every problem you have. These brave military men and women are giving their service and lives for your freedom to post your BS, as they have in every war. How many of you have walked up to a soldier you didn't know and said " I appreciate your dedication and service"?? The next time you hear one of those fighters jets flying over, how about giving that pilot a Thank You for helping to keep you safe, instead of cursing him for the noise his jet makes. When you Dems get your stimulus check in the mail come June, you'll be cussing Bush... all the way to the bank.

I never said a word about Crawford and never will. The WTC was under attack before 9/11. The US Govt's faulty intelligence is to blame for most of this. Bush has made a mess of our economy by following the Republican platform, Corporations and CEO's first and by fighting in Iraq to avenge his father. He broke Texas when he was governor, and now he has broken the US economy (Al Queda's goal in destroying the WTC). I fully support our military. But, I think we are fighting terrorism in the wrong place. It should be fought in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and the Phillipines. Otherwise, you have to go to war with the entire Middle East. Bush has also proven he could care less about McLennan County, so let him live in Dallas Highland Park next to his Library. For once, Dallas will get exactly what they deserve--a big time Republican Loser.

FIRST OF ALL I THINK MICHAEL IN WACO HAS LOST HIS MIND OR MAYBE HE WAS BORN WITH A GOLDEN SPOON IN HIS MOUTH,ALL BUSH HAS DONE IS MESSED UP FROM DAY ONE AND CAUSED A LOT OF PAIN AND GRIEF FOR THE FAMILIES OF ALL OF OUR TROOPS KILLED IN THE WAR,SO MR BUSH HURRY UP AND PACK,PLS.DON'T LET THE DOOR KNOB HIT YOU WHERE THE DOG SHOULD HAVE BIT YOU.

Posted by: David Location: Crawford on Apr 13, 2008 at 09:12 PM
This is just typical of " you" people. You dont even live in Crawford BUT, Yet you are quick to run your mouth about him. When was the last time you picked up a rifle and stood guard, or patroled a wartorn area? I am a vet and would GLADLY stand up with our military again. ANYTIME, ANYWHERE. So just shut up and stay out of our town. ME AND MYFAMILY PROUDLY SUPPORT YOU MR. PRESIDENT.

To DEM LOCATION: I would volunteer in a heart beat if I'm needed. I think it would be an honor to fight for my country to keep my fellow american safe. And what do you mean we aren't safe here. Since 9/11 we haven't had a terrorist attack on American soil. We have arrested many terrorists before they were able to act out. Next you say we are attacking the wrong ones. Cmon smart one terrorists are all the same , they are all joining together it really doesn't matter where there from. We gotta go after these people to stop them from doing wrong to America and anyone else. Every one says we have spilled innocent blood by losing troops in Iraq, but they aren't seeing the big picture. When a soldier signs up they are fully aware of this consequence and still they sign up. These men and women shouldn't be said that it was wasted blood spilt, it should note their heroism on protecting their country from the bad ones. God Bless our troops and I pray we don't ever get the mentality to back down.

some people like dub are just idiots, keep paying high gas prices and let the republicans keep wasting millions each day on getting our soldiers killed. Unless you have more money than you know what to do with, you need to read up on the democratic party, and what they stand for. the working class. republicans could care less about the working class and the values of the working class, but on blowing money on the war and supporting some fake texan like bush. Im glad he is getting out of central texas, and dont let the door hit you on the way out.

Thank you jack in hewitt. I hope KWTX doesn't stop the comment area either. But my 2 posts that didn't get placed had no racial words unless they consider "illegal immigration" racial words and I had no cursing/symbol words. I talked about Bill Clinton's NAFTA and how many citizens lost jobs overseas. How Bush was in office for only 9 months when 9/11 happened, yet Bill knew about Bin Laden for 8 years and had several opportunities to take him out and didn't, just to name a few .....

Posted by: jack Location: hewitt on Apr 12, 2008 at 10:20 PM
to Texan: What may happen is if you have any curse or racial words, they may get filtered out before they get to KWTX. With some sites i've seen, not only are curse words deleted, but so are words with symbols used to replace letters in a curse word. (Like putting an "@" for an "a" or something.) I've said many things against KWTX on here and have never seen one of them not show up. Considering that no other station does this comment thing in town, i'm glad they do and don't want them to stop.

Michael your right. everybody wants to run and hide. you have to stand up and fight sometimes and this was the time. thanks bush.

Too bad we don't have the billions of dollars being spent daily in IRAQ to spend here on we Americans. Our country would be in great shape. Instead we send it to IRAQ where it is stolen and/or wasted due to fraud, waste and mismanagement and certainly not spent for the purpose it was intended. We should have WIPED AFGHANISTAN OFF THE MAP, but what do Dick, Rummy, and George do? Invade IRAQ with no provocation. And what about the precious blood spilled and lives lost of our brave soldiers? Cannot put a price on that. BUSH=Worst President in History!

Posted by: wacoan Location: waco on Apr 12, 2008 at 07:04 PM
The Bushes could do us all a big favor and go further than Dallas to live. another 4 years of a republican is not going to fix a thing. I beleive we need to all vote for garfield and we can come out ahead. If I wanted to get dirty Iw ould consider helping them pack.I have better things to dow ith my time.

Posted by: Texan Location: citizen on Apr 12, 2008 at 05:53 PM
Seems there's alot of bias going on here with KWTX. I'm a repulican. I have posted two comments on this story that wasn't placed. I've also posted on other stories that were not placed on the board, like illegal immigration, politics and murders, to name a few. I know many Texans have concern for these issues. Does anyone know of a Texas internet public forum that Texans can discuss and debate things important to Texans without having to go through news people who may not agree so that don't post your comments? If you do, please let me know... that's of course if this post makes it on the board!

Posted by: Dem Location: Killeen on Apr 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Haha Michael from Waco, I think I would go after the right country in the first place. Also I would't lie about why we are attacking the wrong one and trick everyone into going along with it, ruining the economy in the process. And just because there is a war in Iraq dosen't mean we are safe here, I don't know where you would get that ideal. Hope nothing else happens because we are streached way to thin to do anyhting about it. Unless you would like to volunteer. Silly boy.

What will this country do? There is NO ONE worth voting for!!!!!!!! I just pray Jesus comes back soon and take me and my family out of this mess!!!

Hope he has more pleasant people in Dallas. I think theres just a lot of people who want the government to take more of our rights away and do everything for us. Forget our freedoms. Bush is responsible for 911. What a bunch of garbage. I hear Hillary is gonna drop a big secret on Obama after the 16th. I hope so let these two keeping fighting like a bunch of school children and we will no doubt have another republican in office.Sure the war is unpopular. Sure we want our men and women home. I also do not want to see my babies over there in a few years and I for sure dont want this happening here. As far as your high gas and grocery price someone needs to tell those liberals to let us drill. Everybody has to blame everything on someone else. Besides how many people actually think Hillary or Obama are going to take action to get our troops home. Hope you are not holding your breath there.

Posted by: Rachel Location: Temple on Apr 11, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Yeah!!! Hallelujah and Praise God!! The only smart thing the Bushes have ever done!! Can we help you pack - oh, wait, I don't want to mess up my hands with you!! Just don't let the door hit you!! P.S. If you leave the country, I will be even happier!! I think Iraq is a GREAT place for you!!!!!! After all, you know it so well - it's the only thing you have messed with for the last 6 years. You sure haven't done anything else, but leave a gigantic mess for the democrats to clean up. Those of you who want 4 more years of anything Republican need your brains examined!!!!

Posted by: WooHoo Location: TEXAS on Apr 11, 2008 at 09:31 PM
They need to relocate all the way out of the country, I think Iraq would be a great choice. Let them live like our soldiers have for the past SEVERAL years. I agree with puzzled, he was prez when 911 happened, so puzzled is very correct, why did it happen in the first place if he was doing such a grand job. When you make enemies, they tend to come after your behind and who ever is standing around you.

Posted by: sue on Apr 11, 2008 at 07:23 PM
im glad to see him go, it was just a political thing anyway, just to get votes, what are the people in crawford going to brag about now?

Goodbye good riddence dont let the door hit you on the way out

His primary place of residence has never been in Crawford, it's at Martha's Vineyard isn't it?

Posted by: citizen Location: centex on Apr 11, 2008 at 05:33 PM
I think the Dixie Chicks had him pegged from the beginning. Too bad he has to return to Texas. Democrats have to raise taxes to fix the mess the republicans leave behind. Think about it before you open mouth and insert foot.

Posted by: citizen Location: tx on Apr 11, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Democrats raise taxes...always have, always will. How do you think Clinton & Obama are going to pay for all their miracle fixes? They're not....you are.

Posted by: Puzzled Location: CTX on Apr 11, 2008 at 03:23 PM
Hey Michael he was president during 911. If he was doing such a good job why did 911 happen in the first place.

Posted by: Patriot Location: Tx on Apr 11, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Ann in Temple, your dems can't get together on anything. But they are very entertaining to watch, you know, mudslinging each other. lol

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Waco on Apr 11, 2008 at 02:44 PM
well DUB hope you enjoy the high gas and grocery prices because thats whats in store if a republican gets elected.

Posted by: Michael Location: Waco on Apr 11, 2008 at 02:33 PM
George Bush has done an excellent job at being president. Lets see how good you all could do when someone from another country flys our planes into our buildings and kills innocent americans. President Bush has kept America safe since this has happenend. Its sad to see people want us to just stop fighting and pull out our troops because the instant the terrorists don't have to run and hide anymore they will join back up and plan something else that is bad. But President Bush has done as good as anyone with what he has been delt. So all who are against the war better pray that we continue to try to stop the terrorism and never give up because if we do its gonna be scary.

Posted by: ricky Location: waco on Apr 11, 2008 at 02:00 PM
well i hate to see bush go. one thing for sure if you vote for hillary or obama you will be wasting your vote. i think its a shame we can't get george's brother jeb in the white house next

Posted by: Ann Location: Temple on Apr 11, 2008 at 01:04 PM
DUB for the sake of America, I hope you are wrong. Your statement should put fire behind Democrats and make them come together. Another 4 years would be just like the past 8.

Posted by: Sadam Location: Maxdale, TX on Apr 11, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Good idea. This will save the taxpayers $$$ I hope their move will open the skys around Crawford for recreational flying again. I am tired of hearing all the fighter jets scrambling to force down these puddle jumpers.

So with this happening, does this mean that the property value in Crawford will actually go down to where it should be? Sorry, but 3 bed house on 10 acres, that is $250,000 in West is the same as the $400,000 home in Crawford............better sell the place in Crawford, because it could effect the property value for sure.

Posted by: Citizen Location: Waco on Apr 11, 2008 at 04:39 AM
I will be more than happy to help them pack and move to Dallas. These people have never cared about the average person and never will. By the way, beware of McCain and his "help" to the average citizen in the mortgage crisis. What he is proposing on home swaps will eventually only benefit one segment of the country--banks, mortgage companies, and lien holders on currently overpriced homes. If McCain has his way, the average person will come out the loser and the "lenders" will reap huge profits when housing costs start rising again. A Republican is still a Republican no matter who it is. They only care about lining the pockets of corporations and CEOs no matter what the cost to the average person. We have paid with the blood and lives of our young men and women in Iraq while corporations have raked in huge profits over there.
