More than 9,000 inmates from several state prison units in Southeast Texas were evacuated to other prisons including units in Gatesville before Hurricane Rita struck.

Most will be returned to their regular units by the end of the week, but a prison spokesman says two prisons in the Beaumont area will remain closed until damage has been assessed.

The Gist State Jail and the LeBlanc Unit were evacuated before the storm made landfall early Saturday.

Those prisoners, for now, will remain in facilities in Anderson County and South Texas.

Inmates and staff at a third state prison in Beaumont, the Stiles Unit, and a federal prison in the area didn't evacuate.

Both facilities are operating on backup power.
