One Teen Remains Jailed In Videotaped Beating Case Save Email Print

(April 14, 2008)—One of the eight teenagers charged in the videotaped beating of a classmate remained behind bars, after a seventh teen was released on bond Monday.

Authorities in Florida say Brittany Mayes was released on $33,000 bond.

Employees of the “Dr. Phil” talk show bailed out another girl, Mercades Nichols, over the weekend, but a show spokeswoman says the staffers were wrong to post the girl’s bond.

Eighteen-year-old Stephen Schumaker is still in jail.

The six girls and two boys are charged with kidnapping and misdemeanor batter for a violent beating that was captured on video and widely viewed on the Internet and on TV.

Prosecutors say the teens will be tried as adults.

The youngest is 14.

this has nothing to do with race what wrong is wrong and dr. phil fired that guy who bailed out that stupid un human like girl!!! the prest should get the story and let the world know, they wont be come famous for bieing unhuman!!! they should be put in jail for a long time!!!

Why does it always have to be about race. Race has nothing to do with it AT ALL!!!! I'm so tired of hearing about the race issue. All of these girls were white ( the victim and the attackers) I just pray for the girl that got attacked.

I think these parents need to stop bonding this teens out. If they want to play grown them treat them as so, let them sit their "grown" behinds in jail and let them figure their own way out, without the help of mommy or daddy!! This goes for the case in Waco where the girl was stabbed and the two girls that were expelled for jumping another student and broke her hip. Today kids what a shame!!

Mary.....the Jena kids we arrested for beating up a kid just becasue he was white. Hopefully that is not everyday teenage behavior. I don't think there was one of them that didn't have a prior offense and at least one was just arrested again in Dallas recently. The Jena march was becasue some felt being tried as adult was wrong and they were able to get that decesion overturn. That doesn't mean tehy would be let go scott free. These teenagers are getting what they deserve and are follwing procedure by paying bail to get them out of jail juntil they await trial. I seriously doubt you will be seeing a huge march on their town crying that charging them as adults is unfair.

john boy, you may call it "censorship," but if you are talking about this forum right here... It is owned and paid for and maintained by KWTX, a private business. They are under no obligation whatever to give you or anyone else a public voice. If you want your freedom to say whatever you want, sponsor your own forum. The Constitution gives you the right to free speech, but it doesn't give you the right to have someone else sponsor you.

the video looks fake to me, also to the Moderator..."Moderator is another word for censorship"....Basically all of the blogs that you have that has to have comments approved before they are posted by the moderator and there are several of us that don't like that one bit and by doing that, the moderator(s) are violating our freedom of speech and that's in the Constitution. Check it out. That's why "Moderator is another word for censorship".

Cherie you should chill out I feel the same way that anna does. The Jena boys got in trouble for doing what teenagers to everyday.. but these girls actually locked her in the house and tormented to poor girl for who knows how long... it was wrong and they shouldve been able to get bail... if the jena boys need to rot in jail so do the white girls

I don't think that Dr. Phil's show should have gotten involved in the bond for that girl. It's almost as if she's going to become a celebrity for doing something very wrong. I don't think they should get any more air time. That's what they wanted to begin with and I think the media needs to not give in to them.

Here we go playing the race card. I am white and think these punks should be put away for a long time, it has nothing to do with race. It is people like you Anna that keep the race thing alive and running hot through the veins of society. Right is right and wrong is wrong no matter what the skin tone these punks have. All this has to do with is a good story line for Dr. Phil. Maybe he and his friend Opra can sort this thing out, but I guess if it was a race thing, Opra and Dr. Phil would not be friends now would they? Looks a little like the pot calling the kettle black don't you think? Keep up the good work Anna and no one will ever be able to get along. Try to find peace in life, life is too short.

Why has anyone of these white rats been send home? They should have been left inside, in one room and the key thrown away. But because they are white they are free! What a racist decision! Look to Jena, these kids are still in prison!
