Two Arrested After Campus-Area Party Gets Out Of Hand Save Email Print

A | A | A

(April 17, 2008)—Waco police arrested two people late Thursday afternoon as a party near the Baylor University campus got out of hand.

One of the two people police arrested was subdued with a Taser after either throwing a beer container at an officer or trying to splash an officer with beer.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether either of the two taken into custody was a Baylor student, but Thursday is the university’s traditional play-day, Diadeloso, and classes were not held.

The afternoon party near the intersection of South 10th Street and Bagby Avenue swelled to several hundred people and police were called as the partygoers began to spill into the street.

Police eventually were able to clear the streets, but a number of people were still on lawns and sidewalks in the area Thursday evening.

Officers from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission were called to help check for underage drinkers and minors in possession.

Ummm... wow. I am a student at Baylor and I don't know a single person that would make any kind of comment like the one made by VD. I have at least four friends who are paying for all of Baylor on their own. I am very offended by the people who act as if every student at Baylor is filthy rich and throws money around or has his or her parents just sending in money for them to spend on whatever they want! Most of us are NOT stuck up and selfish, spoiled brats. Everyone I know at Baylor is very appreciative of the help they get from their parents to pay for such an amazing school with valuable experiences that are hard to find at any other. Anyway, I want to make it clear I don't know anyone as horribly rude or stuck up as this VD character so please do not think the students at Baylor have views or attitudes similar to that. Also.... if the parties I go to HAPPEN to have alcohol... most often there is, as a matter of fact, Keystone.

There are some people who fit the "snot nosed" stereotype at Baylor but there are people in Waco that also create a less than desirable stereotype for Waco. Should we as Baylor students accept the negative Waco stereotype and look down on you as you look down on us because of a few bad apples. Absolutely not. To those of you who have had a bad experience I'm sorry, but know that we have had bad experiences as well. And to you, Squirrel Location...Coke is definitely better than DP

Posted by: Baylor Student Location: Waco on Apr 23, 2008 at 02:49 PM
It was supposed to be a block party celebrating our day off...there were inflatables, a dunking booth and basketball tournament...for all to enjoy. Yes, it did spill into the street, but with that many people in one area it's going to happen. Contrary to the news report, it was not one big kegger, and while some people did go overboard, most people did not. This is the case not only at Baylor, but at any bar in Waco and across Texas. Some people cannot control themselves, and they deserve to be punished. They guy who spilled beer on the cop deserves to be punished, and I applaud the way the police handled the party, they could have treated us much worse. That being said, I detest the anti-Baylor sentiment I find in many posts. Baylor students do a lot of good for the Waco community. I know of a group that does weekly service projects around town, and several groups who serve the community in other ways.

Posted by: Squirrel Location: Baylor on Apr 23, 2008 at 10:46 AM
The party was fun simply because DP is better than coke.

VD. Stands 4? Venereal Disease? I thought we were done w/that & yet u still exist!! Typical of u, Baylor Christian, to degrade a custodian, someone who is greatful to God that they have a job. U probably degrade fast food workers & grocery store baggers too, huh? And yet u continue to NEED THEM 4 the very job they perform!! I hope your life experiences aren't as harsh as what u deserve. "Judge not, that ye be not judged." Matt 7:1. U DO KNOW THAT'S FROM THE BIBLE, RIGHT? Hope Baylor didn't teach u to turn ur snobbish nose up at people. Thank u God 4 NEW GRACE & NEW MERCIES every morning, means u get a 2nd chance 2 get it right! Try it again, VD!! Great Representation of Baylor. Think b4 u speak next time! Money is material: eternal damnation in hell is permanent. As u say: "Baylor students are too rich to drink Keystone," take some of that $$ & purchase some personality & concern 4 others! Don't knock the cops 4 upholding the law. Just not used 2 someone telling u NO, huh? Luv 2 u VD!!

Patriot. You obviously have no idea of the situation. If you truly knew Baylor, then you would know that you are in the wrong on at least two accounts. One, no one would waste a good beer on a police officer who isn't worth it. Two, Baylor students are too rich to drink Keystone. You must be the custodian for MCC. Thank you for your wisdom. We are all more intelligent now that we have listened to you.

Nothing wrong with living college life to the fullest. Those of us that have passed thru enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. However, as you learn and grow thru your many experiences, be it partying, drugs, sex, pregnancies, ect., just be a big girl and big boy and prepare to accept the consequences!!! Don't call on "Mommy & Daddy" to help you out!! Not very mature. Just be responsible for your own actions, even if that means you're tasered, restrained, arrested, shot at, whatever. Just be accountable. It's easier said than done when you're used to having someone take care of you financially and emotionally. Now it's your turn: pay your own bills, make your own decisions, find your own way!! Drink til you die but if you hurt yourself or others in the process, be prepared for the outcome. If I was the cop, I would have tased his butt too, throwing beer or a fist at me!! Remember you're at a CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY, so they say. DO YOU WANT MAN'S PUNISHMENT OR GOD'S? Think about it!!

We can do whatever we want....we are college students. It was worth it.

It was a dang good valiant effort, and how about the interview with Craig Crossen. TOAST OFF you haters that don't know what a good time is

college is about partying and having a good time.. that party was the funnest thing I've been to all year and thank god I'm only a sophomore and get to go to it for two more years... it was a valiant effort!

Posted by: This Guy Location: Baylor on Apr 21, 2008 at 02:16 PM
I was there and we had an absolute blast...sorry you folks in the neighborhood like to be average and not have a good time like we do...next time we'll make sure its a bigger party....

LOL@these Baylor kids and their excuses....1.Blocking a city street (for any reason) without city authorization is illegal. 2. Public intoxication and drinking in city streets is illegal. 3. Throwing your Keystone at an officer is an assault and stupidity!! 4. The jaywalking tickets were a (decent) way to control an intoxicated, over crowded, and an apparent illegal street gathering. Grow up kids....spring break is over!

Posted by: mikey Location: in the country on Apr 21, 2008 at 10:53 AM
I forgot to add a big THANK YOU to the Waco Police Department and to all law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to insure public safety. Hopefully these snot-nosed kids will learn to respect you someday. My only complaint in this situation is that no one cut loose with the pepper spray. That would have woke those kids up early in the morning!

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 21, 2008 at 09:42 AM
The COLLEGE students need to GROW UP.....party, party, party...that is all I hear from the kids at college!!

Posted by: BuRsTtHeBuBbLe Location: Waco Citizen on Apr 21, 2008 at 09:19 AM
The comments are interesting. Most Baylor students DO believe they're above the law and often Baylor situations go unheard about, ie the girls who used to get multiple abortions several years ago. If u resist arrest and become aggressive, u ask for hands to be placed on you. The situation is no different that any other unruly situation but the difference is that we're surprised the incident became news, and surprised that you all are offended. Don't like the media coverage? This is how others feel who are always in the spotlight, portrayed as being a horrible culture. And it only takes 1 stereotype to ruin the entire group!! Doesn't feel good, does it? GREAT EXPERIENCE 4 u!!! That's what college is all about!! Burst the Baylor Bubble: this is not Baylor, Texas. This is Waco so you're subjected to WPD just as we are. Step outside of that bubble and see what's REALLY going on in the world. It may not become YOUR reality but at least EXPOSE yourself to REALITY!! Luv from Waco

they need self control them crazy party animals.

Posted by: mikey Location: in the country on Apr 21, 2008 at 07:21 AM
Its called respect for the law, and obeying the law. How many of Baylor's students are under the age of 18? You are not children anymore and cannot hide behind the juvenile system. This is the real adult world with real laws, regulations, and rules. WELCOME!! Excuse me but College is a time to learn, learn not only your school work, but learn responsiblilty as an adult. My Father told me when I turned 18 that if I went to jail I was going to stay there. He was not going to help me. "You get yourself in, then you get yourself out" At the time I thought he was cruel to say that. I now recognize how importent that lesson was since I never have spent 1 night in jail. Thanks Dad, It worked, and now I am passing that down to my children. My money goes to school, not the courts.

Posted by: Madmax Location: Killeen on Apr 21, 2008 at 04:10 AM
Well Mr. Anonymous, if Waco PD and TABC are ruining Baylor, how about they never respond to help the college whenever there is a situation that requires them. Just because you don't approve their tactics, which were probably used to show who is in overall control, then why don't you go to another school because you make it seem that it is so horrid to attend college because of the Police. Just remember, you will use 9-1-1 one day and it will probably be the same cops responding that are ruining Baylor..

Posted by: Anonymous on Apr 20, 2008 at 07:31 PM
WPD and the TABC are ruining baylor. Most all of us are good kids who are responsible when we go out to parties. College is a time to go out with friends and socialize. I understand that some students go too far and deserve their punishments, but when police are giving tickets out for "jay-walking," isn't it obvious that they have gone too far? They should let us enjoy our college years. After all, I bet they did.

Posted by: BU student on Apr 20, 2008 at 06:38 PM
What upsets me the most is that half of these people probably don't even know the boy who was tased, or any Baylor student for that matter. Not everyone at Baylor is here spending their daddy's money. And the boy arrested is not a "Baylor Brat," he is actually a very nice guy. I just wish that people would understand that yes this is college and things like this will happen, so get over it and find something better to do with your time than come on here to bash Baylor and its students. Actions were taken, and I'm not saying they were right or wrong, but what's done is done. Now we should all come together and pray for the kid that was arrested and his family.

Let me begin by saying I am a law-abiding, tax paying citizen. I don't want to be a victim of crime any more than anyone else. I am aware of a situation that happened just a couple of months ago involving the use of a taser by Waco PD. A kid (19) was arrested at the scene of a property crime. He was handcuffed behind his back, on the ground, the officers tapdanced a laser on his chest 8 times and he has the scars on his chest to prove it. I was not there and did not witness the incident. However, no charges were filed for resisting arrest or assault on his part. Are there any rules in place on the use of these tasers? Let me make this clear - I know this kid committed a crime and should be punished, but we have a Court system and a Constitution that I happen to favor over a group of cops administering what amounts to torture at the scene. And, I am a taxpayer and if they end up executing someone in this way, who do you think ends up footing the bill for the lawsuit?

People need to stop stereotyping Baylor students for non-partying, goody goody kids. IT'S COLLEGE PEOPLE, and what's college without the occasional party?! Some of you on here act like you have never partied before in your lives(including some of the officers). LET THE BAYLOR KIDS HAVE A GOOD TIME. UNLESS THEY ARE HARMING YOU PARTICULARLY, LEAVE THEM ALONE! HYPOCRITES!

I'm sure their parents are getting their $40,000 a semester worth of police protection. In fact most offenses don't even make it to booking, mommy or daddy just pay them off. It's about time that there is some "accountability" at Baylor.

It is absolutley incredible to me that many of you writing these comments were not even there and are making judgements based on the article above and what other people have written. Let me clear up a few things: 1. Rob Rob, the street had been blocked for about 6 hours, and no cars were attempting to drive on it. It was a small section, there was no "hazard." 2. Jess, there's no way you were there or you would have seen no cars were traveling down that section of the street. 3. Baylor students do not "slide" any more than a student at MCC or UT or A&M would. That's immature to say that. Did any of you go to college? And what is all this Baylor knocking for? This happens everywhere! So if the kids going to MCC got in this kind of situation, would you be pulling the "rich parent" card? The people of this world amaze me. Yes, some people were in the wrong, but not many.

Posted by: Fred Location: Waco on Apr 19, 2008 at 07:02 AM
One of our little Brats at Baylor got Tasered and "rode the Lighting". Ouch! Beer swigging and public drunkenness is now part of Baylor's 2012 Vision plans. I wonder if the Baylor Brat was able to bond-out of jail with "Daddy's Money" so that the Baylor Brat won't have to miss any of his entitled Baylor classes. I've heard that the Baylor Brat actually "messed his britches" during the Tase. Poor, poor little Baylor student.

Wish more people were like you Student09. From a Police Officer, thanks for your words of support and providing the other half of the story...

Posted by: Student09 Location: Baylor on Apr 18, 2008 at 09:39 PM
1. It started as a harmless basketball tournament with inflatables. Yes, the croud did get big... And yes the DPS has let it slide for a couple years. 2. Yes, It would have been great to have the street blocked Prior, but no student will take the liability for that. The Jaywalking tickets were a message. It wasn't THOSE Victims full fault, it was the man who forced the OFFICERS to send that message in the first place. AS A WITNESS: 3. He assaulted a Police officer and Evaded Arrest, which resulted in the Tazing.... He was at fault and probably is in much regret. BOTTOM LINE: The Police came because "DIA DEL 10th STREET" has grown in years past and it was only a matter of time. I AM SORRY FOR THE INSULTS THAT ANY OFFICER HAS OR HASN'T READ ON THESE COMMENTS BELOW. IT IS A BLESSING TO HAVE BAYLOR DPS PROTECTING AND SERVING FOR THE STUDENTS. PARTYING ISN'T LIFE. INVEST IN LIVES WHILE YOU STILL CAN. AND WHILE YOUR AT AT, THINK ABOUT THE KID ARRESTED AND HIS FAMILY. STUDENT09

Posted by: Madmax Location: Killeen on Apr 18, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Ya, it's never "Our" kids huh??? I'm sure the Police Department had nothing to do than bother your son; I don't think so. He obviously got their attention somehow, but he will get his day in court and can tell his side to a jury of his peers. Also, if anybody is forgetting, maybe all the Officers and TABC Agents were also out there to prevent people getting behind the wheel after drinking. People never forget about the victims and always justify their actions. Unless you have had the opportunity to tell a death notfication to a family whose family member was killed from a Drunk Driver, I don't think you have much room to talk...Lord knows I've had my share.. Feel free to apply if you have the heart to be an Officer, but I'm sure you won't and will criticize from the comforts of your livingroom.

Posted by: Jess on Apr 18, 2008 at 08:57 PM
Good thing they didn't get hit by a car playing in the street like that. See what happened to the guy in Killeen when he was drunk and though he'd win against a car? Lucky it wasn't any of you

Posted by: Rachel Location: Temple on Apr 18, 2008 at 07:30 PM
My question is: Where was the Baylor Police Officers and security staff when all of this was happening? Regardless of what occurred, the incident should have been under control before the Waco police ever had to get involved?

Wah, wah, wah. It's a no-brainer. As my teenage daughter used to say, "If you're not where the head-knocking (or in this case tasing) is going on, you're not going to get your head knocked."

Posted by: 4JJ Location: observation deck on Apr 18, 2008 at 03:06 PM
My son is currently in jail for a charge of resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer by Baylor Police. He states that he was tased multiple times while he was on the ground in his legs with pictures of bruises that have been taken. He also claims he didn't resist arrest or assault the officer in any way and that in fact he was the one that was assaulted. Baylor students are NOT above the law. They are victims OF the law.

Posted by: 10thStreetPartyGoer Location: 10th on Apr 18, 2008 at 02:42 PM
This is just disappointing. Baylor students get one day a year that they can call their own and in years past Dia Del 10th has been the same harmless party and the cops realized it was harmless. There are far better things for the 16 cops I counted and 4 TABC officers to be doing than ruining the only day Baylor kids have to come together and have a good time. Every person that lives within 5 blocks was either there or out doing something else for Dia Del and the jaywalking tickets are a blatant example that the sole reason the cops came was to make money, not to answer a complaint or to "serve and protect". Thank you WPD. We will all just keep paying your salaries and you just keep arresting the good guys, ignoring the bad guys, and handing out jaywalking tickets. It's like a terrible movie or something.

Posted by: college grad Location: texas on Apr 18, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Grant you are a typical baylor kid who cries about the cops until you need them. So instead of complaining about some cops who had to treat you all like three year olds why not just admit you guys were being silly.Oh and by the way Grant thank your parents because im sure they are the ones paying for you to go to school so that you can act silly.

Maybe some of you should attend college so that you can type a comment using better grammar than a 1st grader.

Posted by: Craig C Location: baylor on Apr 18, 2008 at 01:28 PM
By the way, if you haven't graduated college and your highest form of education is the GED you got after you dropped out of high school because you got knocked up, you don't have much room to comment on any of this.

Posted by: MadMax Location: Killeen on Apr 18, 2008 at 01:24 PM
Bet he wont throw beer at an Officer again. See, Officers can be nice at first, but when somebody goes overboard, it's time to be strict and enforce the law, even if it is writing tickets for walking in the road or whatever. The point is, order must be kept, even if it means writing tickets or arresting people for minor offenses. And remember, you started it, not the Police... As an Officer in Killeen, I give much credit to the Wacco Police Department for not arresting more people than they did...

sounds like police used much restraint,if i were to have a redneck get together in the middle waco and the party spilled over into the street, the police would have run out of tear gas and short circuited thier tasers on us and dented thier flashlights on our poor old redneck heads. you baylor kids got off easy just cuz your baylor kids.

Well just because you go to Baylor which is supposed to be a verry highly respectable christian college doesnt mean you dont get the same treatment as everyone else who live in the town or surrounding area. If you dont want to get in trouble and disgrace your school then go to the country or the lake and have your parties. YA'LL ARENT SPECIAL BY NO MEANS BAYLOR IS NO BIG THING ITS JUST ANOTHER COLLEGE...... Im sure all your Parents are proud of all of you and im sure so is your School. Get over yourselves.

YEA I BELEIVE YALL WERE DRUNK AND ACTING STUPID BECAUSE SOME BAYLOR STUDENTS THINK THEY ARE ABOVE THE LAW,AND THINK THE LAW DOESN'T APPLY TO THEM AND BELIEVE THE CITIZENS OF WACO SHOULD WOAROUND THEM. SO YEA I BELIEVE THE POLICE HAD PROBLEMS WITH SOME STUDENTS,AS FAR AS YOU MIKE YOU NEED TO GROW UP AND SEE THE REAL PROBLEMS,THATS HOW HIGH SCHOOL KIDS BEHAVE.

Posted by: David on Apr 18, 2008 at 12:23 AM
mike is exactly right, the story states that cops were called because "partygoers began to spill into the street." the fact is, the street had been blocked almost all day with no complaints, and the cops came for some reason. yes people were drinking, yes there were a lot of people, yes someone threw beer at an officer which was really stupid, but cops were handing out jaywalking tickets? on a street that is purely college students on a day that no classes were held? jaywalking tickets? that sounds like "Waco's Finest" taking advantage of their position. I thought cops were supposed to be respectable individuals, and many are, but the ones handing out jaywalking tickets were out of line, and frankly i can't believe they acted that way. this is college, but maybe the cops don't know what college is like because they didn't go.

ok, so here is the dang deal. Yes there were bounce houses, and a gnarly slip n slide (that Chainsaw rubbed his skin raw on), not to mention smoke ladies and the usual Sperry sporting frat stars. Just around 4 PM central standard time, the mighty Q Dawgs (rawf rawf) and the grossly over-rated defending 10th st bball champions were knuckling down for a intense game. Shortly thereafter a 5-0 pulls up to kill everybodys buzz. One thing leads to another (like all situations in college), and the next thing you know 10th has turned into a local convention of donut grubbers. Cops are hawking left and right, on a power trip, and looking to meet their monthly quota. Then outta left field, a fellow Día del Tenther loses handle of his luke-warm Stone some rando girl handed him a few minutes before. At that point, the hearlding Tasebro takes off barefoot with two cops in pursuit behind him. Next thing you know, Tasebro is down, and others are getting tickets for walking across the street. AMAZING!
