The Federal Emergency Management agency has agreed to check whether sex offenders who evacuated after Hurricane Katrina have registered for federal aid.

FEMA says it would then notify communities across the country that might have sexual offenders living within them.

Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed received the assurance on Thursday from Vice Adm. Thad Allen, the Coast Guard commander in charge of FEMA's response to Hurricane Katrina.

FEMA has been criticized for allegedly blocking law enforcement efforts in identifying sex offenders and parolees who have fled hurricane-ravaged areas.

A spokesman for FEMA in Washington says those reports are incorrect, but Herberg and others dispute that.

New Orleans had more than 1,300 registered sex offenders.

The parishes around New Orleans had another 400, and at least 3,500 were registered in Mississippi.
