(April 19, 2008)--The four-star admiral who abruptly resigned his position in charge of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has concluded his 41-year Naval career.
Adm. William Fallon ended his career aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, docked at Norfolk Naval Station.
A naval aviator, Fallon once commanded the Roosevelt's carrier battle group.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who was among those who gathered to wish Fallon farewell, called the retiring admiral the kind of clear-headed military leader the nation needs to represent it on the world stage.
Fallon announced unexpectedly last month that he was quitting, after just about a year as commander of the U.S. Central Command.
The announcement came days after an Esquire magazine article reported that he was at odds with a White House eager to go to war with Iran.
