Road Race Ends In Gunfire, Death Save Email Print

(April 21, 2008)--A man was killed after shots were fired as his vehicle and another raced side-by-side.

Authorities say that the man lost control of the car at some point.

The car hit a tree and flipped several times.

Officials said they did not yet know if the bullets or the accident killed the man, who was traveling alone.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino told The Monitor in McAllen that investigators do know that he was struck by bullets more than one time.

Authorities were searching for the other car, whose driver Trevino said fled the scene after the accident.

Authorities suspect there were at least three men in the car.

Trevino said deputies were working to identify the dead man, who was not carrying any identification.

I can see the public service announcement now: "criminals: before you commit a crime, be sure the police are there and watching you!!!!" I think its funny how people always blame the police! I can understand a little cynicism because of stories like the one about the thieving sheriff but how about blaming the criminals? I guarantee you that the vast majority of women and men that put on that uniform day in and day out do it because they want to "protect and serve"! They are just as sick of the violence and burglaries as the rest of us are! They could do their jobs more effectively if there wasnt this "code of silence"! If more people would help instead of hinder, the police could get more of these scumbags off the street! Our society will not change for the better until more citizens are willing to get involved! You never know..someday you or someone you love may become a victim!! How angry would you be if someone had information but didnt want to be labeled a snitch and said nothing!

Yeah cause cops are at the right place at the right time all the time! Give me a break! take responsibility for your actions and get over yourself. If the cops were around the location of this race, the race wouldn't have happened there, it would've been across town where there weren't cops. Come on now do you think people woudl break the law if a cop were looking? UH NO HELLO... Seriously-

It's McAllen people! I'm sure the city by the border has more than enough crime to keep local police busy in not overwhelmed!

Duh it matters anonymous? I mean don`t you think can be held partly responsible for this? I mean where were they eating coffee and doughnuts?

GET A GRIP......Thank you! We need more citizens to get involved as watch groups....too many citizens just 'turn their heads' and look away. Get involved in your community and help take a bite out of crime!!!!

I get so tired of people trying to push off things like this tradgedy onto the COPS by saying where were the cops. First off the police can't possibly be everywhere that crime is happening as it happens or there wouldn't be any crime all the bad guys would be in jail. Secondly people that break the law very seldom do it at loctions that are high visibility. I think citizens should just be thankful that they have police and that an investigation is under way. STOP BLAMING crimes that happen on police and start looking at the community as a whole. COPS are there to deter crime and can't always be where they are needed when it is occurring.

does it matter where the cops were?

Posted by: Lauren Location: Coolidge on Apr 21, 2008 at 09:21 AM
and where were the cops when this happened.
