MCLENNAN COUNTY (July 7, 2014) An 18-wheeler hauling live chickens overturned Monday evening east of Waco, injuring the driver and dumping the load on the highway.

The accident happened at the split between U.S. Highway 6 and State Highway 164 outside of Riesel.

The driver was taken to a Waco hospital with what authorities said were minor injuries.

Health Department officials and Department of Public Safety troopers were deciding Monday evening what to do with the chickens that survived the accident and those that didn’t.

A mechanical problem evidently caused the accident, but further details weren’t immediately available.

Authorities were directing traffic around the accident scene as crews worked to clean up the mess.
