WACO (January 19, 2013)--A 49-year-old man who was struck by a flatbed truck as he tried to cross the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 Friday afternoon in Waco later died at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, police said.

Bobby Ray Gooden was pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. Friday, about seven hours after the accident.

The accident was reported at around 1:30 p.m. near the Forrest Street exit on the highway.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that passersby were performing CPR before police and paramedics arrived.

Initial reports indicated that an 18-wheeler hauling a load of cars struck the man first and that several other vehicles may have struck him after that, but Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Friday night that a report on the accident said the man was struck by the one-ton truck, but didn’t indicate whether other vehicles were involved.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed until around 3:15 p.m. because of the accident.

Northbound traffic was backed up to South Loop 340, the Texas Department of Transportation said.
