An effort is getting underway to reunite adults and children who were separated during the chaotic hours after Hurricane Katrina struck.
Jordan Barnes (pictured here), for example, was separated from his mother, whose whereabouts were unknown nearly a week after the hurricane made landfall.
The infant was found on Saturday in New Orleans and is now in a hospital in Baton Rouge.
A nationwide alert was issued Sunday in an attempt to find the infant’s mother. Other alerts have been issued over the last several days in an effort to locate the parents of other young children.
Because of the number of families separated in the wake of the storm, the U.S. Department of Justice asked the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to set up a hotline to help find and reunite hurricane victims.
The hotline is scheduled to go on line at 11 a.m. CDT Monday. The number is 1-888-544-5475.
Photographs of missing adults and children and children who have been found, such as Jordan Barnes, will be posted on the center’s web site.

The center is also working with a network of state and federal gencies to help identify those who died in the storm by posting digitally-enhanced images to aid in positive identification of hurricane victims.
The center is a nonprofit organization that works in cooperation with the Justice Department’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
