The two former presidents were asked by the current president to take charge of a national fundraising effort, just as they did earlier this year after the deadly Asian tsunami.

Bush and Clinton said Monday that private corporations have promised support, including a $23 million pledge from Wal-Mart Stores.

They also said their presidential library funds will donate to the cause and that other presidential library funds have also promised support.

Money from the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund will go to the governors in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to assist with disaster relief and medical services.

The announcement came at the Reliant Park complex, where thousands of Hurricane Katrina refugees are sheltered.

“It's going to take all of us working together,” Bush said.

The two former political rivals helped raise $11 million for tsunami relief earlier this year.

Clinton, meanwhile, said Monday there should be what he called "an analysis" of what led to the catastrophic flooding of New Orleans, but he says that should wait until after relief efforts and cleanup are finished.
